Shattuck Ave North of University Ave in Berkeley, Ca

We met Nathan while he was creating a black and white mural in San Francisco on Division St that can be seen on the freeway above. That vortex mural was for an art exhibition in that building at the Mighty Box Gallery. Since then we have come across several other B/W murals on the streets both in Oakland and San Francisco. While he paints in color, he appears to be partial to a black and white palette. __ Nathan's thoughts about this mural from his website "This piece was created over 7 days for Cohen Rojas Capital Partners in late 2017. The inspiration for this project was from an idea of limiting myself to a single shape, in this case is a rectangle, then use only that one shape to create a successful composition. I've found that with extreme limitations I am forced to test myself in difficult ways, this in turn shows me new aspects of my work and my mind which become an outer display of an inner experience." __ See his page https://www.instagram.com/nathanrichardphelps/

Juana Alicia is a muralist, printmaker, activist, educator who is a faculty member at Berkeley City College. She has painted a number of murals around the bay area since the late 1980′s. Her most well known is the Blue mural LA LLORONA’S SACRED WATERS on 24th at York in the San Francisco Mission District. She was one of several muralist who created the murals on the Woman’s Building on 18th St off Valencia. In 2012 she painted murals at El Centro Chicano on  Stanford University campus.

This mural was painted as part of the Bay Area Mural Festival that happened in late October. If you go their website at the top of their page you will find a map with the location of all the murals along with the artists who participated. We have not seen all the murals yet. We will be showing others.

Dan Fontes is no stranger to the street. He has been quite a prolific muralist. He painted the famous giraffes and zebras beneath the 580 freeway in Oakland by Broadway and Harrison in the mid 1980’s. They were so popular they were touched up in recent years.
