David Bowie - A New Career In A New Town (1977 - 1982). I didn’t get the first two box sets because I was waiting for this one. I probably won’t get the next box sets that will come out either. This set probably will be the creme de la creme of Bowie box sets. Berlin trilogy is what makes this the holy grail. If you’re looking into getting one of his box sets then this is it! The narrative of David Bowie‘s 80s albums, starting with #letsdance, is that they represented a creative nadir, a low point in his recording career. He deliberately took a commercial turn with Let’s Dance, frustrated after producing some of the most creative and influential music in US and UK history but seeing low album sales from it. None of the #berlintrilogy albums or #scarymonsters went gold in the US while imitators of his sound and look were scoring well. And in fact of the first 12 albums that he released in the United States, only five of them reached gold level sales. The fact is, Let’s Dance and #tonight #1984 were not only his first two platinum albums, but combined they sold more albums in the United States and (and I think the UK and worldwide, but he generally did better in the UK) than his 13 previous albums combined. Let’s Dance and Tonight, to be honest, aren’t bad albums. Given what was going on in the 80s at the time, I would say they were very good in fact. I must confess that I find #underpressure annoying and his duet with @mickjagger, #dancinginthestreet, embarrassing :). But people loved those songs at the time, especially the former, which was his highest selling single of all time. Check out a great, smart new book about #davidbowie — #davidbowieandromanticism — link in bio for details or visit jamesrovira.com. #bowie’s #lodger is usually referred to as the third album in the #berlintrilogy, but it was recorded in #switzerland, so I think it’s more accurately the third album in the @brianeno trilogy, who was Bowie’s collaborator (not producer, who was @tonyvisconti) for this album, #low and #heroes. #brianeno would next collaborate with Bowie on the #1995 album 1. Outside, often referred to as #outside. I added photos of the inside of the gatefold because I found the selection of images interesting. Bottom left as you’re viewing it is #andreamantegna’s lamentation of #christ; you can see the holes in his hands and feet. That prone, deathbed position is then reproduced on the cover and other images inside the gatefold. Bowie looks like he’s fallen from some height, but descriptions of the cover art more commonly say he was made up as an accident victim. The last of Bowie‘s somewhat misnamed #berlintrilogy, this album was recorded in #switzerland - #bowie’s last #berlin #album was the soundtrack for the play #baal.
