🫖 favorite scandal, crisis, or major political fallout

I have to pay lip service to my BA thesis blorbo and mention the publication of Bernard Mandeville's A Modest Defence of Public Stews (aka "An Essay upon Whoring as it is now Practiced in this Kingdom").

First published in the 1720s, it makes a case for the legalisation of prostitution in Britain. Its history is not that well documented. sadly, but you can imagine it did create quite a stir... (plus likely inspired the title of Swift's A Modest Proposal).

Certainly worth a read, just for the sheer unhinged-ness and some unexpectedly progressive ideas (if you squint).

If it's not big enough to be counted as a real scandal, then I'd have to go with the fallout (though not necessarily political) between Jean-Jacuqes Rousseau and David Hume.

The level of drama itself is impeccable, and it becomes this vortex that just sucks in many of the major figures in the 1700s intellectual milieu.

I stand by my first choice(s) - Émilie du Châteletor Mary Wollstonecraft - but if I had to choose another one?

Probably Jean d'Alembert. He was one of the smartest people of his time (and that surely translates into survival skills, right?), plus he seems like a person one could easily get along with.
