Bernard the Wolf, a failed attempt at Boris the Wolf he's the complete opposite of Boris: standoffish, rude, smokes a lot, is generally unpleasant i've actually had his design in my head for a long time, even during my just-bendy era, and haven't gotten around to drawing him until now* ( *August 11 )

Betty Boop's Ker-Choo (1933)

It's race day and Betty, Koko, and Bimbo are competing. Betty has the slight edge though as she literally sneezes her way across the finish line!

Model sheets from the Ub Iwerks Studio, 1930s. Iwerks, co-creator of Mickey Mouse, left Disney in 1930 but was never able to achieve much commercial success on his own. The studio folded in 1936.

That doesn’t mean the Iwerks cartoons aren’t worth your time though. If the female figurine in those model sheets looks familiar: that’s the work of Grim Natwick, Betty Boop’s father. (That Jazz era drawing is also by him.) The other animator is Berny Wolf, a man who deserves more recognition (he was one of the animators responsible for Disney’s Jiminy Cricket).

I’m quite amazed what they got away with, by the way—the Iwerks shorts contain some naughty stuff, even for 1930s standards. Flip the Frog was one horny toad.

Betty Boop's Big Boss (1933)

Very bizarre Betty short, the basic premise is Betty is hired as the secretary for a fat businessman who starts to make a move on her. After calling the police and getting even the military to come save her, which causes a shootout that topples the building, the punchline is Betty kissing the creep. It's unclear what has caused this change in disposition, but come on Betty! You can do better than him!

I like the bit where she uses a pencil sharpener as a machine gun.

Aloha Oe (1933)

Super short screen-song (no bouncing ball) which has a monkey couple get married, there's a joke with an ostrich that is mildly amusing and a hula dancing lion.
