Plot:  Meet Stegman. He's dead. In this crime comedy, bizarre assassins must come together to unravel the puzzle of Stegman's blackmail secret, and why he's already dead on the set of his own porn film.

Running Time: 84 Minutes 

IMDB Score: 5.5

Why I Watched It: Two main reasons, I really like Michael Eklund and it was on itunes for .99, win win.

Random Thoughts: I have a soft spot for these weird VOD movies, mostly cause their Canadian and I grew up on these type of low budget films mostly because it gives some solid Canadian actors roles and in this case it gives a very good character actor a very rare lead role.

What I Liked: The main reason I watched this was for Michael Eklund and he’s good here and it also has the great Canadian character actor and genre God Michael Ironside, and of course he’s good.  Also want to give a shout out to Bernice Liu who takes what good have been an eye candy role and runs with it, hadn’t seen her before but she’s good as well.

Stegman is died is a small crime movie that tries to be a quirky comedy, I think the crime stuff works and the story isn’t bad, it’s basically a guy trying to find something and it does kind of go into film noir places but mostly it’s a quirky crime movie with a couple of good performances.

Also I just want to hit on the fact that it’s great to see a character actor get to not only be a lead but also carry a film, it’s nice to see an actor like Eklund get to do more in a film.

What I Didn’t Like: Sadly Stegman is dead is kind of flat, also it’s very slight.  It’s not bad but it just is what it is and it never rises above B-Movie status, the poster is the best thing about the film and I wish the film was more quirky and more fun.

The film is barely 85 minutes and it still kind of drags, too much backstory and character stuff that goes nowhere, don’t get me wrong I like the stuff with Eklund and is daughter but the stuff with his wife really drags the story down and add to the fact she’s not a likable character also hurts the story.  So for me it’s a case of two movies when we have Eklund and Liu on screen and trying to figure out what’s going on it works and there’s a good twist in there but when we settle in to Eklund’s home life and Iroonside’s two sons the film is rather boring and cliched.

It’s also a case of a film telling you it’s more quirky and fun then it really is, it doesn’t have the engery or the sense of humor to make it a good watch. Nothing really stands out, you’ll forget you’ve seen it in a couple of days.

Final Thoughts: It’s a middle of the road movie, didn’t love it but I liked the leads.
