Happy New Year with the Hibberts!!!
The Album: Reger - Drei Motetten op 110.
Reger has a reputation of being an academic composer with an interest in theory but little regard for what musicians can actually play (and what people want to listen to). Personally I think this criticism generally is unfounded. Yes, Reger’s music can be complex and sometimes overlong, but any effort to really get under the surface of the music will be rewarded. Especially in his chamber music.
Some of Reger’s choral music has the disadvantage of being extremely difficult to sing which means that most choirs don’t even bother. And the 3 Motets are some of Reger’s most difficult writing. Especially the second Motet “Ach Herr, Strafe Mich Nicht” ends with an enormous fugue that must be a nightmare to sing.
But that’s impossible to hear when you listen to these splendid performances by the SWR choir under its director Frieder Bernius. The choir is smaller than Reger probably intended but I prefer that since the textures becomes more transparent. Magnificent music with performances to match.
