i think the funniest thing is that the KiY is not at all really a true eldritch horror. he wasn't even created by Chambers or Lovecraft. they took inspiration from the original story of a god of shepherds named Hastur, which is a 8 page (roughly) short story about forging your own destiny and not relying on gods to save you. it's called "Haita the Shepherd"
both haita the shepherd and the king in yellow books can be found free bc they're public domain online. super easy to find
but that's it. that's literally where everything stemmed from. chambers took inspiration, tried to write an odd unreality story with this character that he then kinda tried to turn into his own, and then lovecraft yoinked it and began slapping hastur/kiy into the cthulhu mythos bc that's kinda... all he knew how to do lmao
so it makes sense that the books arent gonna be the best when the source material is... not at all related to cosmic horror in the first place, and hastur was originally just a throwaway name for an anti-religion short story
Yeah, so, I just found that out like, after I read lol
So, maybe I just didn't like cause I really love eldrich horror, idk. Either way, it's and ok book, just not my vibe maybe
