The bitch-ass Romans killed him for it.
All Your Ingredients Are Fresh
Cooking Oils
If you keep your olive oil near the hob then don’t. It will spoil quicker if it’s in fluctuating temperatures a lot. Instead you’d be better off keeping a little squirty bottle close and just topping it up occasionally.
You can taste when an oil has gone bad as it will start to taste bad. This usually happens between 6 months and a year depending on the oil and where it’s kept.
Dry herbs and spices
If you cant smell it then you cant taste it, You’ll never get the same flavor from dried ingredients that you do from fresh. Consider this an excuse to use them with reckless abandon. Stop following the recipe instructions for herbs, especially if your trying to convert fresh to dried, start following your taste buds.
You can tell when dried herbs and spices have turned, because they’ll become bland.
Flour
Flour will go off after about a year. The taste won't change that much but the starches will have lost their rigidity. This means when you go to bake, your bakes will be too crumbly or fall apart too easily. It’s still perfectly edible and you shouldn’t necessarily throw it out, you can use it anywhere where structure is not your main concern.
For this one the ‘best before’ is a good indicator. If anyone knows any ways to work it out let me know.
The Spruce has an excellent guide to shelf life. Don’t just throw food out according to the date. Use your senses and start trusting your taste bus to tell you what is good
