First date impressions are everything. You know that you need to make a good impression on your new potential guy but sometimes nerves get in the way. Just relax and keep the basics in mind!

Dress for Success

Be comfortable! Even the most amazing outfit isn’t going to look good if you can’t pull it off. You need to look comfortable in your own skin- and in your clothes. Don’t wear a shirt that you always need to pull up or a skirt that you always need to tug down. Wear shoes that you can actually walk comfortably in. It’s so important to carry yourself confidently. Keep your head up, push your shoulders back, and maintain good posture. It’s important in everyday life and especially important on a first date.

Ask Questions

Show your first date with him that you are interested. Don’t interrogate him or put him on the spot too much but get to know about his daily life and interests. You don’t want to seem like you just want to date someone. You need to show that you want to date him.

Remember That He is a Stranger

It’s great to build rapport but keep in mind that he isn’t your best friend. Your first date isn’t the time to spill all of your secrets. Stick to light topics. Get to know each other. Don’t overwhelm him with every detail of your life and don’t make plans for the future. All of this can come later. Even if you are excited about this guy, take your time. You need a lot more than a few hours together to know if this is your future best friend.

Mind Your Manners

Don’t forget about the basics. You should be comfortable but not too comfortable. Be courteous and polite. Show up a few minutes early for your date. Use your table manners. Don’t interrupt or play with your cell phone. Don’t drink too much. If he paid for your night out, thank him for it. It’s all pretty simple but it’s easy to forget about your manners if you’re nervous.

Be Interesting

Tell your first date something about yourself. You want to let your date that you are willing to let him get to know you. Imagine him describing you to one of his friends after the date. He should be able to talk about your interests and say a bit about your past.

If isn’t asking enough questions or your answers are falling flat, bring up some new topics. Have a few great stories on hand. If he asks about your hobbies, tell him about the first time you went scuba diving or how you became interested in art. Remember to keep your stories short. A great story should be clear, interesting, and to the point. You will definitely get bonus points if you can tell a funny story.

Be Decisive

No one likes an indecisive person. There is no need to be pushy but don’t be shy about showing your preferences. You are an adult so you can order your own dinner and decide if you want dessert. If you disagree with your date, say so. Don’t complain or be aggressive but show your true personality.
