Now that mosquito season is in full force, it's time to review what we can do to keep from getting bitten. The bloodthirsty vampires will descend upon us & harass anyone trying to enjoy a barbecue or a picnic outdoors. Those little buggers are the world's deadliest animals, spreading diseases like malaria, West Nile, & dengue fever that kill 725,000 people per year. For reference, we humans kill about 475,000 of each other every year, & wolves manage to pick off 10 of us per annum.

When you buy an insect repellent, make sure it contains DEET. DEET has a bad reputation online, & multiple products offer DEET-free options to repel insects, but you should ignore them. DEET works well against ticks, blackflies, horseflies, deer flies & other biting insects. Some people can have an allergic reaction to it, but this is rare. 10% DEET will last for about 2 hours; 24% for 24 hours. Don't spray it on your face because it's not good to inhale it. DEET can also damage certain fabrics like leather, spandex & certain plastics. Don't worry if you're pregnant. A double-blind study in pregnant women found no increase in side effects or adverse effects for the mother or fetus.

Citronella smells nice but stops working after 20 minutes. Yeast tablets or vitamin B1 do nothing to repel mosquitoes. Don't let the internet fool you.
