Call Me By Your Name Review

Taking a writing break from personal projects to extol the masterpiece that is “Call Me By Your Name.”

“Call Me By Your Name” will wreck you. Let it. It sweeps you away, seduces you, inevitably breaks you, and puts you back together again. Guadagnino’s gorgeous film handles the book with reverence, and pays meticulous attention to detail for fans.

Both lead actors are incredibly charismatic in their roles and equally excel in tackling the spectrum of their characters with intense vulnerability. But there is immense satisfaction and awe in recognizing that Timothee Chalamet is a total star and we are here for the beginning! 

The themes of first love, friendship, family, identity, obsession, shame, acceptance, and unconditional love are palpable and nuanced throughout the film. They validate the human experience in subtle and suprising ways. Maybe the reason I’ve seen it 5 times and read the book 3, is because I recognize the universality in myself? 

Aciman is a master of human psychology, articulating our torturous internal- monologues when faced with obsessive desire. He perfectly captures the tap dance of neurotic self-doubt, while elevating the courageous and sometimes crazy things we do in the pursuit of love-both Hammer and Chalamet capture these subtle details beautifully, putting pieces of themselves into characters I already adore. 

Humans can be brutally unkind, and savagely cruel, especially to ourselves. It’s hard being human. But no matter who you are, no matter who you love, at it’s core, “Call Me By Your Name” in both the book/film highlights the grace and liberation in discovering acceptance, safety, and unconditional love, from our loved ones. Especially when we struggle to, and even sabotage, loving ourselves.

*SPOILER Edit: Another thing that struck me is there isn’t a cruelty to Oliver’s character. So often in these types of on-screen relationships, where one party seemingly has more power, (age, experience, influence, whatever) the pursuer of the relationship is often portrayed as one sided, reckless in their desire, often projecting shame or guilt onto their less powerful partner after the relationship is taken to the next level and goes awry or desire cools down. Despite Elio’s agony and perception of Oliver as apathetic over his initial inaction, it’s Armie’s vulnerable portrayal of Oliver’s hesitation and uncertainty, even lack of confidence and nerves, that starkly contrasts other stories. Also, Oliver never blames Elio the next morning when he is processing his emotions, but validates the importance of their experience to him. “Do you know how happy I am that we slept together.”  Upon recognizing Elio’s discomfort, there is no: This is your fault, YOU misunderstood, your youthful naivete and beauty seduced me. Now we’ll just forget this ever happened and you can agonize over this for the rest of your life. There’s a mature, well we didn’t talk before hand, so let’s talk about this now.  This is such a breath of fresh air.

Let's take a second to appreciate Max Bowden's fearless acting. He put so much into that scene. Ben grabbing Callum's head to pull him down for the kiss, the legs akimbo, the moaning and gasping. He's just brilliant. 😍😍😍
