CADENCES OF MADURAI

The place where the fresh jasmine flowers are harvested is almost like a rabbit hole. The more you learn about it the deeper it goes. Apart from the jaw-dropping architectures Madurai also has a whole different side of it which is it’s traditional art forms. Almost all the folk arts being practised in Tamizh Nadu has it’s origins from regions in and around Madurai. Let’s see about a few of them and how you can experience these once in a lifetime treasures.

JALLIKATTU :          

Name rings a bell doesn’t it. It is the most famous traditional sport of Tamilnadu and it has  almost become an identity today. Jallikattu is the bull chasing sport of Thamizh people mainly conducted during the Pongal Festival. The native bull is let out into the arena where male participants race towards catching the bull. The person to tame the bull gets rewarded with gifts and prizes from the local authorities along with the attention of young women.  In olden days some households agreed to give their daughter in marriage only to the groom can tame the bull. It is still in practice today and youngsters take an active part in the sport.

The Range Of Mystery

What is so mysterious about this disconnected easter ghat range? That sends shrills down the spine of 90s kids as soon as the name is pronounced. But these trembling responses are not just happenings of today but date back to the time of Sangam literature. A range that has been the destination of thrills and mysteries from time immemorial. It is none other than Kolli hills situated in the district of Namakkal.

Kolli Malayalis: Apart from its breathtaking serenity and fresh atmosphere, there are also hundreds of mysteries knotted up around this short hill range. One of the mysteries is that this hill remains authentic and untouched by any urban activities. The hill is also a habitat for the hill tribes called Malayalis. They have been the inheriting dwellers in this range from the Sangam period and still stay true to their ancestral practices till this day. One such interesting practice is that these tribes swore to not cut down any tree in the hill and still abide by it.
