Reposted from @melanated_minds - The #AcademyAwards just released its 2019 #OscarNominations. #MahershalaAli was nominated for “#BestSupportingActor” for his role as #BlackPianist #DonShirley in the movie “#TheGreenBook”, about Shirley’s and his relationship with his white driver, played by #ViggoMortensen, who somehow was nominated for “#BestLeadActor” in the same film about Don Shirley and “supposedly” the actual #NegroMotoristGreenBook (which was an actual guide for black travelers during the #JimCrowEra). How is Don Shirley a supporting actor in a movie about him? Why, after all these years, doesn’t the Academy get it? Not to mention that Shirley’s family, who was already pissed with his depiction in the movie, have to see their relative’s legacy relegated to “supporting actor”? In his own movie? Make it make sense, Beloveds. • • In 1988, actor/comedian #EddieMurphy was asked to present the “#BestPictureAward” at the #60thAnnualOscars. Here, in this clip, you hear him state why he was considering turning it down due to the Academy’s failure to honor black ppl. He stated that we must be recognized. • • Now while the Academy has made minor strides in recognizing and awarding #BlackTalent, nominations like Mahershala/Viggo’s highlight how the Academy is still tone-deaf when it comes to giving black talent the recognition they deserve....which is why black ppl need to stop feeling the desire to be validated by an these institutions that have made it clear that bone-throwing is the only recognition and acknowledgement they are willing to give. So...Fuck em. That said, “#AllOfTheStars” from the movie ”#BlackPanther” better win “#BestOriginalSong” because it is simply the best original song. #BlackLikeVanilla 📌 @joelcastel1007 & @blacklikevanilla - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/BtvjrJdH_OO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ziw8zq62y5nn
