Ace prompt: beta Dean is worried that his alpha boyfriend, Cas, believes the stereotype that betas don't have a sex drive because even though they've been dating for a while Cas hasn't asked him to share his rut yet. Cas is worried about their relationship hitting a point of no return when he finally tells Dean that he's ace. (Of course they shouldn't worry because they're disgustingly in love).

Cas spends his rut alone, at times moody and pacing, at others depressed and sleeping fitfully. He thinks about texting Dean a million times, pretty sure the deep ache in his bones would be soothed by his — whatever Dean is. Not his mate, though that’s all he can think about for days. His mate, who smells faintly of a meadow at dusk.

Soon to be ex, Cas figures, because he heard in Dean’s voice how hurt he was when Cas said I’ll be incognito for a few days, but everything is fine without inviting Dean to join.

As soon as the rut has started to fade, as soon as Cas is sane enough to control his tongue around Dean, he turns on his phone. A flurry of work email notifications ping in, but his hands go cold when he sees no texts from Dean. The last message is a meme Dean sent days ago that made Cas laugh out loud on the bus, earning him a couple of curious looks.

He hesitates for a long time, unsure what to say, settles with something easy:

Cas: How’s your week been?

Dean: Hey baby. How are you? Dean: Can I see you tonight or are you still incognito

Cas: I’d love to see you.

Dean: See you at 6

Cas is still tired, but he spends the afternoon with his windows open despite the summer heat, burning incense. He’s not quite sure what Dean might be able to scent, but it seems better to be safe than sorry.

Dean is punctual, gives Cas a smile that doesn’t entirely reach his eyes when the door opens. But still kisses him, quick and chaste. This close, Cas can catch his scent, and he’s desperate to press his face into Dean’s neck, breathe him in until his hands stop trembling.

Dean doesn’t grab beers from the fridge as usual but says, “Can I talk to you?”

Cas flinches. Clenches his fists at his side. “Of course.”

Dean gestures and they sit on the couch, half turned to face each other and knees bumping. “I know —” Dean starts. His voice cracks, and he swallows and tries again. “I know we haven’t talked about being exclusive. But — you were with an omega during your rut, weren’t you?”

Cas blinks. “No, of course not.”

“So,” Dean says, looking away. “It’s because I’m beta, then? You believe that bullshit that betas are sexless freaks?”

Devastation runs through Cas so quick and hard that Dean gives him a sharp look, nostrils flaring. “No,” Cas says, trying to keep his voice even. “I’m the sexless freak.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Cas forces himself to breathe. This had to happen eventually, but it’s been so good pretending. Hoping that eventually he’ll want Dean like people are supposed to want each other. “I’m — I’m asexual. I should’ve told you.”

“Oh,” Dean says.

“I’m sorry. I lied to you, but I just — I just wanted —”

“When did you lie?”

“I knew it would change your feelings about me, but I still didn’t tell you.”

Dean looks at him, like searching for something, for a long time. “Ok,” he says. “You’re asexual. And not with an omega.”

“I was alone.”

Dean nods. Looks down at his hands, or Cas’s hands that are clenched on his thighs. “Have you been into the kissing and stuff? Or just pretending?”

Cas blushes, for no reason other than the memory of long makeouts on the couch make him warm all over. “I’m into it.”

“If you’re not, you’ll tell me? No pretending?”

“Yes, I promise.”

“Ok,” Dean says, and gives him a little crooked smile. “You gonna let me be here for your rut next time? Whatever you need?”

Cas’s mouth opens, then closes. This conversation has gone off-script from every other time he’s had it with someone and he’s not sure what to say. “If you want.”

“And, uh, did you want to be — you know, exclusive? Or…”

“Yes, of course.”

“Cool,” Dean says, and leans over to kiss Cas. Tentative, but Cas can scent his relief and delight when Cas kisses back.

“Cool,” Cas says back, trying to tamp down the butterflies in his stomach. Feeling, for the first time, that maybe he’s not really a freak.

Dean is kind. A bright soul amongst the many.

Dean holds up a top sheet and pulls a face. "Does the slick spot look like a dick to you?"

"I didn’t know slick spots could so accurately portray Ronald Reagan.”

Dean throws his head back and his laugh echoes against the cinder block walls.
