All pups are born with canine-like ears and tails, but most people eventually lose (reabsorb) them.
Pups are born with folded ears. It is said that those who develop straight, wolf-like ears as children are more likely to become alphas and those who’s ears stay completely folded are more likely to become omegas.
Alphas naturally lose their ears and tails before the age of thirty, but usually lose them earlier when their mate pierces their mating gland for the first time.
Betas lose their tails and ears as part of their presentation.
Omegas are unique in that they might have these features for life. The only circumstance in which they lose their ears and tails is in the third trimester of pregnancy.
Prosthetic ears and tails are made by various companies and usually only sold in adult stores, varying in quality depending on the price point. Some move around and can only be found out by touch, and some are made to be fashion accessories and are obviously fake at a glance.
Younger alphas and omegas might be driven to wear these out of fear of judgement, or not wanting their personal life to be public information. They are also quite fashionable among beta women and older omegas!
To lose your tail as an alpha or a beta is considered to be your entrance into adulthood in many cultures. Some traditionalists even consider it the same for omegas. However, in most countries, everyone is considered an adult at the same age regardless of whether or not they have anything sticking off of their butt.
All dynamics instinctually treat individuals with ears and a tail with more kindness and patience than those without. This is believed to be one of the reasons why omegas keep their tails for much longer, and why every pup is born with them.
Ears and tails are also a big part of pup communication, who’s scents tend to be more muted the younger they are.
