As much as I want the weird little found family back together again, this book did make me really happy. Pet standing up for herself and sticking to her principles was amazing. When Athelas tries to convince her to come back and she says “why? nothing’s changed” - beautiful, fantastic, cheering her on.

Too, later: Preparing places to sleep. Shedding familiar light on old rooms. That odd transformation of the self once returned to sleep where so many teenage nights went by. And that embarrassing feeling of imagining some of the spirit to still be here.

Entlang der Straße. Oktoberlicht lügt Wärme in den Mittag, aber über dem Horizont ziehen die nächsten Schauer ins Land, in die Stadt. Voll und schnell die Strecke, wer kann, übt Rücksichtslosigkeit gegen alle anderen, weil es eben geht, und weil das Freiheit ist. Tropfen auf der Scheibe, Radiostimme im Ohr. Es gibt insgesamt Erfreulicheres während dieser Wochen. (Aber zumindest duftet es aus dem Kofferraum nach Äpfeln, und an den Schuhen klebt noch etwas Erde der Almen. Etwas zum Mitnehmen in den normalen Takt.)

10pm, elsewhere. Emptying that bottle, staring through the trees, trying to find a hole in the clouds but there's none, only starless dark for now. Everything's shadows, with random flashes of past in between. Different ages, difficult reconnects. The whole is more than just a sum of its parts, and even this way at some point the sheer amount of parts and layers is overwhelming... .
