Spent the past half an hour trying to work out the maths for Zero’s backstory… the maths won’t maths. Because (rant incoming, under the cut for spoilers):

He has to meet JinYeong sometime in the early 1950’s when the Korean War takes place. Since fae have the whole ‘four years for every human year’ thing that means (if we give ourselves some breathing room by assuming this only applies until human-equivalent 15) Zero is a child for about 60 years. So if he meets JinYeong fresh into his teenage rebellion phase let’s say they are both around 16 (Zero would then be 61 technically). That means he had to have been born in 1890 approximately.

Pet finds a photocopy of Anne’s (her great-grandmother) driver’s liscense and it looks modern enough she mistakes it for her mother’s. But if we work out Anne’s date of birth (assuming everyone in the family tree had kids at age 25) she had to be born in 1925 and then kidnapped by Sero the second time around 1950 to take care of Zero.

You see the problem?

At this point I have to assume that in addition to the whole ‘twenty year pregnancy’ Sero somehow stuck Zero in a magical time pocket to grow up faster.

I’m beginning to get the sense that the fae’s whole “we don’t have emotion” thing is less like some people don’t have brown eyes, i.e. they were born that way, and more like some people don’t a full set of kidneys or an appendix or a spleen, i.e. someone cut it out with a knife.

Athelas: Maybe I should have let Zero stab me earlier. 

Athelas, two seconds later: No, bad Athelas. That would be Manipulative and Wrong.

Finished the City Between series. Going to need a t-shirt that says “Don’t talk to me; I’m thinking about feral pets and twisty fae and savage mercy”

I love some good angst. The post-betrayal is absolutely amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything this good. Just… the way Pet and Zero are both reacting to any mention or reference to Athelas. How they are both so raw and sick from what he did. And the way it seeps into everything - they can’t look directly at the chair he sat in, or go into his room, or say his name without that horrible twist.

Wish you guys could see the amazing City Between animatic that is set to ‘I’ll Be Good’ by Jaymes Young and lives nowhere except my mind.
