Marathon of Books Blog - March 19th, 2014
Dear Canadian Teen Book Lovers,
I started early, waking up at 5:30 am to get ready for my taxi ride to the CTV studio for my Canada AM interview with Beverly Thomson. I arrived at the studio, had my make-up done, and waited for my television time. And it was a lot of fun. I met wonderful people and had a truly memorable experience.
People asked if I was nervous being on television, but it is something that I've done before for a couple of Hospital for Sick Children telethons (I met Lloyd Robertson that way) and some transplant-related activities over the years.
Plus, when I get to talk about something I am passionate about, in this case, teen books, Canadian authors, and issues of illness and disability, I forget to be nervous. Which is saying something because I remember the torturous experience of having to write and say a speech every year from grade four to grade eight. I was a great writer, but definitely not a great speaker.
The overwhelming positive response to today's interview was amazing. I had a doctor appointment afterward (where I passed out a lot of buttons) and a woman recognized me from Canada AM in the waiting room. That was pretty cool. I'm very happy to see the Marathon of Books continue to gain momentum, and today's interview was a huge burst of speed.
Luckily, in the midst of my busy, busy day, I had time to read "Jane, the Fox & Me" by Fanny Brit and Isabelle Arsenault, translated by Christelle Morelli and Susan Ouriou. It took me only seventeen minutes to read, and I was instantly transported back to my childhood when I was reading "Jane Eyre" for the first time.
Thank you to everyone who liked the Marathon of Books Facebook page, thank you for the many supportive comments I received, and thank you for the donations that are coming in. We're off to a wonderful start in establishing a new teen fiction award, and I look forward to the journey ahead.
