Indonesia Part 6 Ladies and gentleman, Omar Sakr and his poem Echoes of Home.
Indonesia Part 5 The night I heard Deborah Emmanuel's spoken word piece, 'Broken Seashells', poetry was awoken within me.
Indonesia Part 3 We are still in Singaraja. Ibu Sonia, lecturer at Ganesha University, takes us to meet her literary community, Komunitas Mahima. Here is me next to a poster with my name on it. You can't see it in full because my excitement is too big but I promise you it is there. Omar and I sat in a circle with the students. We read our work (slowly, so the students, all who speak English as a second language, could understand at least some of what we were saying). Then we took turns answering questions about feminism (me) and poetry (Omar). It was a strange chain of communication: they would talk in Indonesian for several minutes, Sonia would translate and spoke English for like, twenty seconds. I would answer in English and she would translate back! The next day we came back for a workshop. We talked about creativity, inspiration, and writing purely for yourself. Shout out to Putri, Virginia and Heny for love and chats. For about an hour afterwards, the students took photos with us. I think we were celebrities?
