Beyond The Bar |
There is a very interesting storyline in Beyond the Bar of a man and woman who got married, both agreeing they did not want children. But as time went by, the husband changed his mind. They got divorced over it. And as more time went by, the woman changed her mind and decided to have children with her new husband.
I think this is an important dynamic to explore in media, especially as more women are waiting longer to have kids. Cause I don’t think either of them are wrong about changing their minds. You are allowed to change your mind about this.
I mean, it’s gonna be difficult to deal with as a couple when there is a sudden shift on something that was once agreed upon, but stuff like this happens. Is it a little heartbreaking to have your partner suddenly bail on you over procreation? Sure. From both perspectives. Should you wait it out and hope the other changes their mind? That is also hard. For both parties. Even if they do change their mind later, there’s no guarantee they won’t resent you for it or feel pressured into doing so. That would be true regardless of which party wanted kids first, too.
It’s complicated business not being on the same page in this particular matter. Cause it’s a big deal.
I mean… I’ve never wanted kids. I don’t want to have them, I don’t want to my partner to have them, I never wanted to date someone who had them, and I’m pretty firm in what I want in that regard. And it’s ended some of my relationships, and I think that was for the best. For both of us.
Ive watched this particular issue play out in a lot of different ways over the years. Couples who broke up because one of them didn’t want kids only to have that naysayer turn around and have kids with the next person they dated. Couples who both did not want kids adamantly but then later on both changed their minds. Couples where one was kinda indifferent about it and is still kinda indifferent about it and as such is an indifferent parent. Couples where one absolutely did not want kids and immediately bailed the second the other decided to keep a pregnancy. I mean, there’s a lot of different outcomes.
And it’s one of those situations where you tend to side with your friends or family even if you could actually see the other party’s point of view too if you bothered to look at it. Nuance is required and is rarely offered.
Anyways… I like this plotline. Right now the show does seem to be painting the woman in a more negative light for not changing her mind as quickly as her husband did… but we shall see how this plays out as the show progresses.
Started the kdrama Beyond the Bar on a whim - and the first episode was really good. The writer packed a lot into that first hour and this is their first drama script. Park Mi Hyeon! Color me impressed.
Will I stick through a legal drama? Probably not, as courtroom dramas are not my thing - but I’ll definitely chip away at it. And if the law is your jam I highly recommend you check this one out.
beyond the bar friends…. it’s been a while!
is there any word on season 2?!? I NEED MORE OF THIS INSANE CHEMISTRY. NO I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN
