I don't know if anybody has commented on this, but didn't it sound to Mari as if there was something wrong with the bus? When she says something along the lines of "I don't know. Didn't your dad know about this?" while they are looking at the motor and before they notice Sana et al...

yeah that’s a good catch, i’m not sure what that means for the storyline but i’m sure they put that in there for a reason. maybe the bus will turn out to have a lot of problems and the girl squad and pepsi max will have to band together to get their own bus?

I’m not sure if I understood you correctly, but in my experience, they will get (at least temporarily) anything you ask for… I’ve borrowed books from all over Europe through them, so just go for it! :)

I know and perhaps when I have a smaller pile of library books looking accusingly at me, I might do so. Although perhaps not so much that I’ll get mentioned on a library conference as a problem person...

But this was more - public libraries rarely ILL directly from abroad. If they can’t get something from Denmark, they usually send the request on to Statsbiblioteket, which either handles the ILL from abroad or straight-up buys the book, if they judge it something that somebody in Denmark ought to own. Frankly, I was mostly expecting the ILL from abroad thing to happen - I’m just delighted that it was bought, you know?

Truth. It’s hardly like puberty comes with a handy dictionary, though it feels a little unlikely to me given that they’ve thrown the word out there and made it synonymous with his liking Connor. I guess really my disappointment is in the show rushing at the finish line something that’s been building for two seasons.

Hi :) I have two questions for you: I saw that you are reading Dickens, and I have to admit that despite being an English major I have coincidentally never read anything by him, but people seem to have very diverse opinions about his writing. What do you think so far of The Tale of two Cities? Would you recommend it or any of his other works? I also saw you reblog Fresh off the Boat - what is that about? Recommendable? Cannot wait for September(?) and The Raven King! :D

1. I’m currently actively writing something so I am not actually reading any of the things I am supposedly reading, but so far I do like Tale of Two Cities more than Great Expectations, which put me off Dickens for almost a decade. So, I would say go for that, at least.

2. Fresh Off the Boat is a new comedy from Nahnatchka Khan of Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23 wonder, as well as somehow inexplicably the first Asian American primetime family sitcom in 20 years. If you liked 23, I absolutely recommend it—it’s not as wildly eccentric or caustic, but it is as honest and clever, and really delightfully specific about the immigrant experience.

Hi :) I saw The Fall today - well because I have seen it so often on your blog. I really liked it, but I'm not good at verbalising it. I thought maybe you could talk a little bit about why you like it so much? - When you have the time? - Or do you have a post already somewhere? Best, &c :)

I find it hard to explain. It’s far from a perfect film. Ebert called it a “magnificent folly” and Tasha Robinson hated it with a passion yet named it one of her top films of the year, just for context. My own feelings are much less complicated, but I understand its weaknesses as a film (largely, in pacing; sometimes, in dialogue and exposition). I’m just also not sure there’s another film that more accurately depicts my soul. I mean, if you had to make a list of the things I love and the things it features, you’ve got a near perfect match. Damaged souls seeking each other out and making each other better, meta narratives, the power of imagination, coming of age themes, unreliable narration, darkness explored without fear but always with hope in hand. It’s also just, frankly, a revelation on the visual level. Every shot is carefully crafted and imagined, culled from both our collective imagination and the natural wonders of our own world rather than CGI.

It’s a film where, for me, even when it’s not working, I’m sort of awed. And I can actually, in many ways, accept the ways it doesn’t work as being part of the effect. After all, it’s a film about the stories we tell, and passionate investment we have in these stories regardless of whether they’re real or totally work—because we need them to keep going.

Hey :) A while back I saw that you were reading We the Drowned, and I was wondering what you thought about it? I know a lot of people who've read it because it's by a famous Danish author. However, I've never attempted it myself because of its size and what I know of the plot - which isn't much, but people who drowned...? Can you recommend it/ tempt me to read it? On another note I preordered Blue Lily Lily Blue, but it's another month and more wtf... Have a nice day! :)

I liked parts of it. It’s hard not to compare it to One Hundred Years of Solitude or War and Peace or any number of the spawning epics, and unfortunately for We the Drowned, the comparison does not reflect well. It’s messy though, and frustrating on the gender end of things.
