Truly, Madly, Deeply- Chapter 11
At the hospital, Sam is pacing the waiting area as the nurse has taken Ruby to be examined. The only thing going through his mind is ‘It's too early. Is the baby okay? Is that why labor started? It's just too early.”
When his name is called he looks up to see the nurse motioning him to follow her. She leads him down the hall past rooms on each side, some occupied and some not.
At the end, the nurse stops and hands him an ugly pale yellow gown, gloves and a mask. “She's been admitted and administered Nifedipine to try and stall the contractions. She's 31 weeks so if it doesn't work, your daughter would survive but getting to 34 or even 36 weeks would push that past 95% chance.”
“Thank you,” Sam says before donning the mask and entering the room. Ruby is on the bed, her dress replaced with a drab gown with wires coming from underneath. There is a very steady heartbeat filling the air. “Hey baby.”
“Sam, it hurts,” Ruby whines. “I'm not ready!”
Sam reaches out and grabs her hand. “I know. I know. I'm right here though. I'm not going anywhere.”
The two lovers sit in silence as they wait to see if the medication is going to work or if they are going to be meeting their daughter shortly.
Sam's phone buzzes in his pocket. He pulls it out to see the screen, reading “Ames”, but he doesn't answer it. He slides it back in his pocket and kisses Ruby on the lips.
JoBeth walks into the apartment she shares with her three friends with a weight lifted off her shoulders.
Adam Milligan had assured her that he was the best and he would get straight to work on taking down her cyber trickster and making sure none of the pictures and video would be released and she wouldn't have to pay a red cent.
They had been interrupted when Y/N and Lisa got into a fight -over Dean, of all people! - but afterwards Adam had asked if after he won her case, if she'd be interested in going on a date with him.
It had taken her by surprise. JoBeth had never really had someone take an interest in her and she wasn't sure what to do.
She did think the attorney was good-looking and it made her feel beautiful that he was apparently into her.
So, as to not let him down and possibly not get his best work, had told him they'd wait and see how the case went. That seemed to appease him so they shook on it and went to find Dean and Y/N.
Charlie notices her first and asks how it went.
“He's going to take the case,” JoBeth says. “Promised to get everything erased from Rocco's drive and we could actually sue him for extortion and deception. I could actually get money from him!”
“That's terrific. You go girl!” Charlie cheers. “Where's Y/N? How was it for her to go there? Was Dean there?”
JoBeth animatedly divulged all the details of what happened and finished it off with, “She gave me her keys. Said she'd be home later.”
She did leave out the ‘Adam asked me out’ aspect; she could fill them in later if things actually worked out in her favor.
Charlie was completely shocked about the fight between Y/N and Lisa and equally stunned that she agreed to be left with Dean.
“Wait. So Sam's assistant is pregnant and he's the father? Y/N was Dean's and he fucked her every which way. What the hell is going on at that firm? Office politics works very differently there I guess,” Charlie wonders aloud..
They laugh at that and are still laughing when Emily and Rich walk in. JoBeth retells her story with Charlie adding her own commentary.
“What?” Y/n says, trailing her fingertip down his chiseled jaw, his stubble prickly.
“Let's move in together.”
Y/N laughs. “That's not a question. Quit being silly.”
“I'm dead serious.”
“Dean?” Y/N says, her finger frozen mid-stride and her body numb. “That's not a joking matter.”
“I'm not joking Y/N,” Dean whispers. “I love you and I want to prove to you how much.”
Y/N turns to lay on her back, staring up at the ceiling. Dean just fucking asked her to move in! And just a few hours after they'd reconciled!
It wasn’t like it was with Tyler. No, Tyler had moved in with her - without asking, mind you, and then took over her apartment and then cheated on her when he got bored. But Dean wasn’t Tyler. He wasn’t a worthless fool who only used her to better himself. Not even close.
It's crazy. Insane. She'd be a lunatic to say yes, wouldn't she? They'd had one date. One! And it had gotten interrupted.
But then she thinks of how she feels deep in her heart and how much she missed him these past two weeks; how she realized that she loved him more than she'd ever loved anyone before.
So what if people thought they were nuts? They love each other so why not?
She turns her head to look at him to find Dean staring at her intently.
“Okay.”
“Okay?” Dean repeats. “Really?”
Y/N nods her head, smiling wide at him.
“Holy fuck!” Dean exclaims as he rolls on top of her and kisses her madly. She spreads her legs and welcomes him back into her body.
They make love slow and easy and reach their climaxes together, quiet cries and moans filling the air.
Dean and Y/N join Adam in the hospital waiting room. He informs them that Ruby is still pregnant but the medicine doesn't seem to be doing its job and actual labor should be starting shortly.
Dean gets himself a coffee and gets Y/N one of her ‘girly’ drinks - a cinnamon bun latte. She thanks him and they sit in silence waiting to hear something from Sam.
The clock on the wall ticks the minutes and almost three hours later, Sam erupts through the doors with a proud smile on his face.
“Amara Claire Winchester. 4 pounds, 14 ounces. 17 ¾ inches. Got a set of lungs like her mother.”
He produces his phone and shows it to the three of them. Pictures of a teeny tiny baby mid-scream as a nurse cleans her up, the baby in a diaper and a little hat lying against Ruby's naked chest, picture of Sam, Ruby and Amara, the proud parents kissing as the baby slumbers on her mother.
When he takes the phone back, he slips it back in his pocket, not knowing that the simple action has shared the last picture on the camera roll to the last caller.
The celebration of new life quickly turns into drama on the maternity ward when Amelia shows up, demanding an explanation.
Dean and Adam try their damnedest to calm her down as Y/N looks on, staying out of fray, but Amelia pushes past them and makes her way onto the maternity ward. Y/N, Dean and Adam all look at each other and wait for all hell to break loose.
Their heads turn as they hear Amelia’s voice echoing down the hall and through the doors of the waiting area.
“What the hell Sam?”
A couple minutes later, Sam escorts his wife off ward and they join his brothers in the waiting area.
“Keep it down,” he demands. Ruby and Amara are trying to rest. They’ve just been through hell!”
“They’ve been through hell?” Amelia seethes. “What do you think I’ve been through? Getting a message from my husband of a photo of him kissing his legal assistant while she’s holding a newborn! Is it yours?”
Y/N look toward Dean and Adam to see what to do, but the brothers are intent on watching the middle Winchester sibling, waiting for the fallout.
Sam leans down to his wife’s height and looks her right in the eye. “Baby, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean for you to find out this way. Yes, she’s mine.”
Amelia slaps Sam across the face as tears run down hers. “You are an asshole Sam WInchester and I wish I’d never met you! I will see you in divorce court.”
Dean murmured to Adam, “You know she’s going to hire Brady right?”
Adam snickered before everyone turned their attention back to Sam.
Amelia stomps out of the waiting room and leaves. Sam stands in his spot for a moment before he turns to look at his family.
“Who sent her a picture?” Sam asked, fury building.
“Dude, she said she got it from you!” Adam reminds him. “Better check your phone.”
Sam pulls the device from his pocket and starts scrolling his finger across the screen. “Well shit. I guess I told on myself. Fuck!” he exclams as he runs a hand through his hair. “I’m going to lose my kids. It wasn’t supposed to be this way.”
Y/N watches as Dean and Adam try and comfort their brother, although they both knew he was right. He was screwed!
In the end the most positive thing Dean had to add was, “You know it’s a conflict of interest for me to work with you but we’ll call Crowley - he’s your best option at this point.
The first few weeks of living with Dean was amazing. He was so attentive and loving. Most mornings consisted of making love, showering and going into work together. The nights were spent cuddled on the sofa or in bed, talking and laughing, just spending time together.
Y/N regaled him with stories of some of the fiascos she and the girls were involved in; he informed her of how he and Sam had found out they had a half-brother after their dad's death and how the firm of Winchester, Winchester & Milligan came to be.
During the second month of sharing Dean's home, Luke came to stay for a week. Y/N was mildly nervous about it but she decided to take the chance to get to know him. After all it was spring break which meant she’d probably learn a lot about him in a week . Luke was happy to see Y/N and excited to inform her his birthday was “only 15 days away”.
“15 days? Well, that's just a blink of an eye!”
“I know,” the boy said proudly. “Are you and Dad gonna be at my party?”
“We wouldn't miss it!” Y/N answered enthusiastically, which causes Luke to launch into a list of presents he hopes he gets and which classmates he invited.
“I hope Brian doesn't come though,” Luke says, woefully. “His mom is always hitting on Dad and it's -” he makes a face like he is going to throw up.
Y/N laughs and looks at Dean who just shrugs and shakes his head, silently telling Y/N she has nothing to worry about.
That seemed to set the tone for the week and she found that it was much easier having him around than she’d imagined. Luke was a smart kid and seemed to enjoy showing off for her - he used legos to create a flower bouquet for her, drew pictures for her to put on the fridge, and explained his math homework like it was the simplest thing in the world.
Y/N is cleaning up breakfast at the end of his stay, Dean and his son out back, throwing a football back and forth when her phone rings.
She grabs the device to see an unknown number on the readout. She presses the answer button and puts it up to her ear.
“Hello?”
“Is this Y/N?”
“Who's asking?”
“This is Anna Milton.”
“Oh Anna, hi! How are you?” Y/N greets, wondering how the woman got her number.
“I just wanted to reach out and tell you something; I just need to get it off my chest.”
