Stills from Colour Box by Len Lye, 1935

Made for the UK General Post Office Unit, an experimental film advertising the weights & cost of postage. Handprinted film is the primal means of early film making & Lye needed to work cheaply, so he promised his boss a film for £5.

The colour patterns are created by dragging a comb through the film stills & combined with the Cuban music- the colours, movement & rapid imagery oscillate together to draw sound.
