Yet again, I’ve spent way too long obsessing over some idea for a Gravity Falls AU! Sure has been a while, hasn’t it? So I’ma share it with you! I call this the “Black Hole of Oregon” AU, or just “BHoO” for short, cuz bhoo is fun to say. Anyway, here goes!
The short boring version; an AU where Ford did not discover Bill, and started a famous research lab with McGucket studying anomalies in the Gravity Falls area, and all the other characters are monsters and creatures at the lab.
NOW, FOR THE LONG INTERESTING VERSION!
After revealing and proving his and McGucket’s studies on the anomalies of Gravity Falls, Ford and his partner became world famous, winning a good deal of scientific awards and acknowledgement. With the money provided, they buy out the entire Gravity Falls area to construct a large lab and compound to protect and study the strange things there. After a while, Ford gets a call from a hospital down in California. He’s told Stan was found half–dead and taken into a hospital, with Ford’s number the only one. Although it’s fairly awkward for both of them, Ford agrees to take care of his brother as he recovers. They try and live like normal, but the bad blood’s still there, and everything is tense.
One day, Ford drags Stan along on one of his and McGucket’s expeditions, exploring a mysterious cave full of ancient drawings depicting strange scenes. Fooling around, Stan reads one of the writings out loud, and Ford and Stan start fighting over Stan not taking things seriously. Frustrated and actually feeling pretty vulnerable, he’s pretty baffled when a strange talking triangle appears in his dreams...
He’s pretty slow to trust Bill, but the demon’s a master of manipulation, preying especially on Stan’s tense relationship on his brother, insisting that Ford will through him out sooner or later. Long story short, eventually Stan creates the portal to try and impress Ford. It works. McGucket doesn’t get sucked through on accident, and so they have no idea what Bill is up to... until it’s too late.
As Bill is coming through the portal, Stan realizes he’s been tricked. Angry with himself, he runs right into the danger zone to deactivate the machine and save his brother. But Bill was already partially through. With the sudden shut down of the portal damaging him, some primal instinct caused him to latch onto the nearest thing, fusing him into Stan. Despite their best efforts, they couldn’t remove the parasitic demon. Even Bill couldn’t get himself loose.
In spite of this, Stan manages to keep in control of his body, but things aren’t all peachy keen. He now has demon instincts hot–wired straight into his brain, basic mindscape and fire powers. His arms are also shadowy and black, with the ends curved in sharp claws. He generally keeps his hands in his pockets and wears long sleeve shirts to hide this the best he can. Also, his left eye looks constantly possessed. It’s the one part of the body 100% under Bill’s control all the time, and so Stan generally wears an eyepatch so Bill can’t spy on them too easily—although they inhabit the same mindscape currently, Stan’s careful to keep his thoughts guarded. Although it isn’t pleasant, it’s actually fairly painful, the partial transformation helps him act as a sort of emissary between the human scientists and the anomalies.
But that’s not the only thing changed up in this AU! Now for the younger Pines twins!
Both are monsters living in the facility to be studied by Ford, Mabel being a Yama–uba, a creature from Japanese folklore. her hair is abnormally long and a pale golden–white, almost albino, and she always wears one flower in her hair. On the top of her head, beneath her hair, she has a hidden mouth. She also has a single horn on the left side of her head, even though this isn’t a common trait of the Yama–uba, but she’ll never say where it came from. For a long time while in the compound, she’d always take off the clothes given to her, because Yama—uba are often naked. Naturally, Ford, Stan, and Fiddleford all found having a naked twelve year old monster around was pretty dang awkward. She refused to wear clothes even occasionally unless it was a sweater instead of the jumpsuits typical of resident anomalies. She would still sometimes go naked until Stan sat down with her and told her not to. Mabel agreed to because she adores Stan, but she doesn’t get why humans find it weird. She also has a small pet pig named Waddles. No one knows where she found him, but she’s extremely defensive of him and takes the pig with her almost everywhere.
Dipper is also a creature from Japanese folklore, a bakeneko. He looks like a fairly ordinary cat, brown with white splotches on his head that look like the Big Dipper. But he’s hardly “ordinary.” For one thing, he can walk around on his hind legs, and speak English. He actually has other powers as well, but finds them difficult to use; shapeshifting, cursing, manipulating dead people, possessing people, and guiding wolves along. The only one he can actually access is his shapeshifting power, and with it, he turns into a human. Due to his struggles to properly use his powers, more often than not he’ll still have cat ears, a tail, cat eyes, and sharp teeth. As he gets older he learns to fix all of these except the teeth. He purposely designed his human form to look similar to Mabel since they consider themselves “twins.” This is because they were both brought into the lab from Japan while vary young, and often interacted while there. After picking up the word “twins” from Ford and Stan, they decided that they’d be twins from then on. Dipper is actually fairly ashamed of being an anomaly, and so whenever he can, shapeshifts into a human. He does his best to help Ford, and idolizes him, and wants to study anomalies as a human himself.
Lightning round time!
Pacifica is a level ten ghost; in this universe, the lumberjack ghost came earlier and she died in the attack, but she still haunts the area. No one’s quite sure what her unfinished business is, and she won’t talk about it. When she’s angry, she turns into a corporeal golden fire snake creature.
Candy is a Kumiho, a Korean creature similar to the kitsune; a nine–tailed fox with the ability to transform into a beautiful girl. She has a “yeowu guseul,” or “fox bead,” that she wears on a necklace. All of her intelligence is stored inside.
Grenda is a djinni, aka, a “genie.” (Because Grenda is awesome.) She has the ability to possess humans and tale on multiple shapes; dragons, animals, and human. She can also possess creatures. As is common for djinn, she is made up of fire and smoke, but in her human and other forms, appears ordinary and is solid to the touch. She can imitate other’s voices flawlessly and has some basic magical abilities.
Wendy is a penghou, a Chinese tree spirit. She appears as a tailless black dog with an extremely human face, and can speak human. Unlike some of the other anomalies, she was not brought in, and was actually born in Gravity Falls.
Soos works at the lab as an unpaid intern and an underpaid janitor. He mostly just wanders around being squishy and loveable. He has a pet wolpertinger (rabbit with claws, fangs, antlers, and wings) named Awesome Guy.
Gideon is a chubby little child satyr, a two–legged half man half horse/goat creature from Greek mythology. He plays a castanet and other than that is the same annoying brat as always.
AND THAT’S ABOUT IT FOR NOW! Huh, it’s certainly been a while since I obsessed over a random AU. Aaaaanyway, I’ve got like a couple billion ideas for this, so expect so more doodles and thoughts on it later. :P If any of you guys have headcannons or thoughts on this AU, it would be super awesome to hear them!
