THE girl beamed. It wasn’t often that she got her friends to join in with her bad habit of going to norebangs way too much, mostly because they were all shy. It wasn’t like she had the best voice either, but she still liked to let go and have fun. When the doctor agreed to go with her, for what reason she didn’t understand (though she wasn’t questioning it), Haeryeong was going to make sure he would get up off his feet and have some fun singing. She gleefully handed over the mic, but the question he posed made her wonder. “Hey you’re the one that’s going to be singing with me, we should chose something you like.” She said while looking up at him with a bright smile. “What are some of your favorites songs right now?”

When Florin heard an old friend was coming to town, he’d been naturally excited. He hadn’t seen Sam since the summertime, when he’d made his official move to Seoul, and he was looking forward to seeing another familiar face in the city during the holidays. I’ll visit you for Christmas, his friend had said. It’ll be great. We’ll have lots of fun together. Florin believed every word of it because Sam never lied to him, and he and Sam always had fun when they were together. It was why they got along so well, and why they’d grown up calling each other their best friends. But ever since Florin’s departure from the States, it seemed as though he and Sam were having a hard time keeping up with each other.

Florin told himself it was natural that they grow apart, being that they lived in different countries now and everything. But when he thought back at how they had used to be so close, and about how they used to tell each other everything, Florin sometimes grew sad. So many things had changed for him this past year and Sam hadn’t always been there for him like he’d needed him to be. Florin didn’t think he was high maintenance and he usually didn’t ask for much, but he and Sam were growing apart since the turn of the new year, and as much as he tried to stop it from happening, it seemed inevitable. They were on different paths. Sam didn’t want the things that Florin wanted. Sometimes it didn’t seem to make sense that they were friends. At times it felt as though the only reason they were cool with each other was that they had always been cool with each other since the start, and were just used to having each other around.

Though Florin still liked to think of Sam as his best friend, he was doubtful that their relationship was going to improve. He’d left California on good terms with his friend, but after they didn’t message each other as much as they used to. In fact, Sam didn’t seem to be using social media much at all, which made keeping in touch with him extremely difficult. So it was a surprise when Sam told him that he’d planned on keeping his promise and visiting him in Seoul at the end of the year. He’d told Florin he would visit when he’d first left, but after a while Florin realized it probably wasn’t true.

Sam was always full of surprises, so in his excitement for his impending guest, Florin went out and bought his friend a gift. He’d had it wrapped and everything, and was about to head home to relax after a day at the crowded shopping mall, before he received a text message. Sam wasn’t coming. He’d canceled his flight. Florin assured his friend that he understood, and that they would see each other another time, but he was deeply distraught by this change of plan. He knew it was stupid of him to assume it was going to work out for them. Florin had a feeling he was never going to see his friend again. He didn’t know why, but it was a strong feeling.

“Fuck,” he cursed, under his breath, trying to not allow his frustration to show on his features. He’d wasted this day picking a gift for nothing. Part of him knew he could keep the gift to send to Sam later through the mail, or even just keep it for himself. But in his anger, he didn’t even want to carry it all the way home with him. Sam didn’t deserve this. It was childish of him to think so, but mostly he just wanted to get it out of his hands.

Determined to forget about this whole fiasco, Florin looked up and locked eyes on his target - the first man that came into his view in his vicinity. He quickly stalked over to him and handed the small wrapped box over, hoping the stranger wouldn’t refuse it.

“Hi. Merry Christmas. This is for you.”
