In this issue of BWQ, Beth Smyers Innis writes about the complexities of deciding when and how to best be out as a bi+ parent with teens.

"At one event, I donned my “Protect Queer Kids” sweatshirt. I had no idea what an impact that would make.

I thought, Hey, great, I’m super friendly! I’m a bi mom supporting all the queer kids! Many of the kids gave me some unexpected eye contact as they said with emphasis, “I like your shirt!” and both my kids made mention of how cool the kids thought it was.

At the next theatre event, my older daughter, then fourteen, said, “So do you think you’ll wear your MIGHTY BI t-shirt to this show?” I practically choked on my “Well, sure, honey, I’d be happy to!”

It turned out there was a huge difference between wearing a shirt and embracing queer kids and outing myself as a bi parent..."

Mother dont always know best, even more so when it comes to my girls.

I hate being scoled by my mother that my daughters know i like girls. Not that I go around telling them girls are hot, but that i have told them, yes, at one point i was dating your other mom and that I have dated girls in the past. 

My mother thinks that since i am dating a man now that its something the girls dont need to learn about since if other children were to find out that my girls would be made fun of.

I want my girls to know its ok to love whoever you want to love and just because their mom has dated men, women and people in between that there is nothing wrong with that. 

She totally gets even more irritated when i talk to  my daughter about how i don't see myself as a female all the time and we talk about transgendered, queer gender, cross dressers, and drag queen and kings. I have quite a few friends who fits most of these. Mind you my mom is ok with homosexuals, my oldest sister has been married to her wife for the last 5 years. But anything out of strait or gay is too much is seems.
