is there not a way you can just casually have them talk about their romantic pasts and your bi character mention female and male exes? or is that too like forced exposition

I’m leaning toward adding a few mentions of exes after an establishing flashback. I am hoping that a handful of mentions helps to reinforce the point that his identity isn’t a punchline or a point of ridicule.

I hope it avoids feeling forced; the characters are long-time friends, so a few nostalgic rants make sense, right?

The bi guy, Ben, is trying to steer his company toward more charity work, including LGBT charities and it puts a strain on some of his business relationships, so I am very wary of how I address his sexuality. The first ideas I had were all way too close to the gross ways I’ve seen bisexuality handled in m/m romance (i.e. villainized women and shitty heteronormative families and ashamed MCs hiding behind or deflecting with “straight” options) and I was incredibly frustrated with myself for it.

The feedback is very, very appreciated. I honestly hadn’t even thought about casual discussion of exes because it is usually done so terribly in this context that I dismissed it before even thinking about how the characters would actually talk about it. But they would have natural chances to talk about it, and I am pretty sure I’m talented enough to let them do it without straying into trope-y territory that’d make me quit if I were a reader. (I hope, at least?)

[Disclaimer: the next bit got super ramble-y because I got randomly emotional, and also because it’s 2am and I’ve been sick for a week. It has very little to do with actually responding to anything, and a lot to do with the aforementioned factors and a lot of pent up queer anger. Feel free to skip it!]

I want to put an m/m romance with a bi lead into the world that shows bisexuality as normal and accepted. I want a bi MC who doesn’t struggle because of his sexuality. I honestly just want a bi MC in a “gay” romance, because they are so, so rare (and please, if you find an example of a well written one, send it my way, because I am not sure that I ever have). Because, sadly, in real life us bis aren’t often embraced, and dammit, we deserve better. And I won’t erase a part of myself from my work, because glob knows there are plenty of people out there doing it for me.

[I hope the fact that I’ve had 2 minor crises about this book and it’s only existed in my head for like, 4 days isn’t a bad sign, because I’m kinda in love with these two]

Now, to do the part of being a writer where I actually, y’know... write something.
