My coworker who is a mother of two kids has really inspired me. As a general stereotype, most parents I’ve seen haven’t reacted well to letting their children expirement with gender. However, this lady has an eight-year-old daughter who looks like a boy. Every day she wears soccer uniforms, she has her hair short, and a boyish face. She is mistaken for a boy by every single person she meets.
The reason she does this is because she loves her older brother, and wants to look just like him. However the mother says it could be she is expirementing at a very young age without even realizing it.
And you know what? Mom was okay with that.
It scared her, you could tell. Not because she didn’t want the daughter LGBTQ+, but because she was afraid she may be made fun of, harassed or treated poorly. But that didn’t stop her for a moment. She’s always right with her, gently correcting people if they misgender her daughter, and the daughter is the happiest thing in the world.
How hard is it to just let a kid be a kid?
Yeah, maybe the kid is LGBTQ+. But maybe they’re just acting outside the typical gender stereotypes. Why do we need a toy for boys and girls at McDonalds, and why can’t a boy have a girl toy? Why can’t a girl wear basketball shorts? For heavens sake: why can’t boys do makeup????
Some of you need to hear this.
Stop limiting your child because of stereotypes.
