June 15, 1720 - Just Published: The Works Of Alexander Pope (Mostly Homer)

Just published in 7 Vols. in large and small Paper, Fol.

The WORKS of Mr. POPE: Containing his Miscellaneous and Poetical Works in one Volume; and his Translation of Homer from the Greek in six Volumes. Printed for Bernard Lintot at the Cross-Keys between the Temple-Gates; at which Place only the Subscribers to Mr. Pope may receive their Subscription-Books neatly bound.

[I don’t have ready access to my copy of Griffith or The Bowyer Ledgers at the moment, which would probably clear this right up, but this appears to be an advertisement upon the completion of Pope’s translation of the Iliad (Large paper folio: ESTC T59731, Griffith 41, 49, 77, 95, 114, and 118; small paper folio: ESTC N937, Griffith 42, 50, 78, 96, 115, and 119), bundling together, respectively, the large paper (ESTC T5387, Griffith 83) and and small paper (ESTC T5388) folio issues of Pope’s 1717 Works. Both titles were also simultaneously issued in quarto (Pope’s preferred format).]

A Vade Mecum for Malt-Worms: or, a Guide to Good-Fellows. Being a Description of the Manners and Customs of the most Eminent Publick Houses in and about the Cities of London and Westminster. With a Hint on the Props (or principal Customers) of each House. In a Method so plain, that any thirsty Person (of the meanest Capacity) may easily find the nearest Way, from one House to another. Humbly Dedicated to the Brewers, and illustrated with proper Cuts. To be Sold by Thomas Bickerton, at the Crown in Pater-Noster-Row.

June 1, 1720 - Call For Subscribers To An Elegant Edition Of John Gay’s Works

Subscriptions for Mr. Gay’s Works on Royal Paper in 4to, (at a Guinea in Hand, another on the Delivery of the Book) are taken in by Jacob Tonson in the Strand, and Bernard Lintot, at the Cross-Keys between the Temple Gates in Fleet-street. The Volume will contain what he hath already published, with more than a 3d Part entirely new, and will be very shortly delivered to the Subscribers, as being almost printed off. A List of the Subscribers will be printed, who upon sending their Names with the 2d Payment, will have the Book delivered to them.

[Note: ESTC T13893. This subscription was quite successful, though Gay’s good fortune was short-lived, as Johnson notes in his life of Gay:

Being now generally known, [Gay] published (1720) his poems by subscription with such success, that he raised a thousand pounds; and called his friends to a consultation, what use might be best made of it. Lewis, the steward of Lord Oxford, advised him to intrust it to the funds, and live upon the interest; Arbuthnot bad him intrust it to Providence, and live upon the principal; Pope directed him, and was seconded by Swift, to purchase an annuity.

Gay in that disastrous year had a present from young Craggs of some South-sea-stock, and once supposed himself to be master of twenty thousand pounds. His friends persuaded him [i.e., expostulated with him] to sell his share; but he dreamed of dignity and splendour, and could not bear to obstruct his own fortune. He was then importuned to sell as much as would purchase an hundred a year for life, “which,” says Fenton, “will make you sure of a clean shirt and a shoulder of mutton every day.” This counsel was rejected; the profit and principal were lost, and Gay sunk under calamity so low that his life became in danger.

This Day is publish’d,

Barrenness strictly enquir’d into: And the Cause found, makes the Cure easy; as is so plainly demonstrated in the following Treatise, that any Lady may be her own Physician. Publish’d for the Sake of those Persons who have great Estates, and no Heirs of their Bodies to enjoy ‘em. Sold by W. Boreham at the Angel in Pater-noster Row. Price 6d.

May 18, 1720 - I, Too, Am A Victim In The Affair Of A Late Scandalous Pamphlet

Whereas I have been grossly imposed on by one Richard Burridge, formerly convicted of Blasphemy, in the Poultry Compter, to print a scandalous and lewd Book, entitled, Cupid restor’d to Sight; or, His Mother Venus unveil’d, &c. and having by my Credulity drawn in Mr. J. Roberts at the Oxford-Arms in Warwick-Lane to the Publication thereof, under the Pretence of its being Mr. Philip Horneck’s Copy: Being now made sensible of my Error, and that he was no Ways concern’d in the Work, I do heartily beg that Gentleman’s Pardon, and think this publick Acknowledgement the least Reparation I can do to his injur’d Character.          SAM.
