I'm curios, where does your url come from?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I really like porcupines.
Seriously, I decided when I was like 15 that porcupines were my favorite animal (I think it started as a bit of a joke for some reason and then I was like, wait a minute, porcupines are actually really fucking cute).
About the same time, I started using the internet (it was 1995, this was like dialing into BBSes and free Juno email unless my mom was feeling generous enough to pay for AOL or Prodigy for a few months). And I basically started using porcupine as my username for everything from the start. When the internet got popular enough that sometimes just “porcupine” was taken, I started adding a number to it.
When I started posting fanfiction to ff.net, in 2007, I was well-established with a particular porcupine-based username on lots of message boards and places, and it was really really easy to connect that username back to my real identity. I didn’t want it to be so easy to connect my fic back to my real name, so I came up with PorcupineGirl instead.
So that’s what I use as my fandom ID, to the point that fandom friends call me PG even when we hang out IRL. Unfortunately the tumblr url porcupinegirl was taken (by someone who has NEVER USED IT, grrrr), so I had to add a dash.
