Time for more ride pimping, Safety Minded Edition! ♿
Prompted by Mr. C mentioning that I really should get the Rolling Rave moved over from the clunker to the new chair, or just pick up some more wheel lights--plus add some bike-type wheel reflectors at the bare minimum, before we move to Sweden.
(Because drivers are hopefully already looking out for those! And it should be way easier to physically get out and about from that new place on my own, not to mention Malmö being less of a plague pit to keep my hopefully by then fully vaccinated ass from avoiding going out out around humans.)
Anyway, I also saw Question: DIY Customizations on /r/wheelchairs, including this comment thread:
Which also helped inspire me, with my own Too Much Gene possibly kicking in just a tad. 😅
His video, BTW:
No Bluetooth control here, unfortunately! (Or speaker setup.) But, an assortment of lighting which will hopefully look interesting besides being functional from visibility and seeing where I'm going perspectives.
On the Rolling Disco front, it looks like enough of a PITA to move the previous fairly cheap hub mounted lights over. Considering it's strings of the LEDs on a wire that needs to be (rather laboriously) woven and wrapped through the spokes. So, I decided to try a little different approach:
These just shine out from around the hub, and have the added benefit of the wheels not needing to be moving for them to show up nicely. Good reviews from multiple wheelchair users. It should also be USB rechargeable while they're on the wheels, and have way more control options even if that involves a lot of awkward button pressing to cycle through the different color/flashing modes!
Then there's the slightly more boring stuff. The bright white Scotchlite reflective spoke covers (with some basic yellow oval bike wheel reflectors Mr. C was insisting are a minimum still on the way). For better visibility with the lights off.
There's also the extra bright basic bike headlights/taillights set, which should also be useful for seeing where I'm going.
Eventually need to get some more rechargeable AAAs for the little Maglite-in-clamp type headlights, since they take three each. But, in the meantime they do have the regular batteries they came with.
There are two of those little taillights too, but I had one out of the box to mess with. That also came with pairs of red and blue little spoke-clipping button LEDs included, in case you want to impersonate a cop? 🚔 No particular plans for those, but maybe I'll think of something.
I also needed to get another dorky-looking rechargeable head lamp anyway, after the one I had for general purposes apparently also got thrown away by that damned cleaning crew. 🙄 I actually used to find that useful for extra visibility (and navigation!) while cycling after dark--with another little red taillight clipped to the back of the band, because why not.
Should be at least as useful in the chair, if not quite the same level of dorkiness without the bike helmet!
Probably some updates in a while, once I actually get the chair wiped down and the new shit installed on there.
May be a bit of customization overkill, but I'm having fun. 😁
