Excerpt from Bifur’s diary, a non-chronological series (03/?)

Today while we were hiking, Bilbo suddenly darted off the trail and into the trees. Thorin acted annoyed, but we were already moving at a slow pace and I saw him move a hand to his sword as if ready to defend against any threat that Bilbo might discover. The Hobbit yelled over his should that we need not wait for him, for he would catch up in a minute, but Thorin ordered everyone to wait. Just as he said, Bilbo returned in a matter of minutes with his arms loaded with wild mushrooms. When questioned about how he had known that the mushroom were there, Bilbo simply shrugged and told us that he has always had a very good nose, even for a Hobbit. Not everyone openly shared Bilbo's excitement at the find, but Bombur was quite pleased at the addition to tonight's supper. After stowing the rest away in his pack, Bilbo fell back to walk beside me and handed me a few smaller mushrooms, explaining that this kind is good for snacking on. We shared the mushroom as we walked and Bilbo told me a few tales of his childhood.
