Happy Birthday Big Bill!

Sometimes I like to think about pigs (this is often) and sometimes when I like to think about pigs I like to think about a very special pig named “Big Bill”

Big Bill is the current record holder for the largest known pig. He lived around 1930, and was a pig belonging to the farmer Elias Buford Butler in Jackson Tennessee. Big Bill was a Poland China breed pig, and weighed (drumroll please…) a whopping 2,552 pounds, or 1,158 kg for my fellow Canadians. He was also around 3 meters long. In all he was more of a small car than a pig. For comparison, the average pig of 2026 is at most 700 pounds (300kg) and a little less than 2 meters long.

Now Im not sure how or why Big Bill was so big, i still have more to learn about this not so little guy but I think its safe to say we know why his name was “Big Bill” (he probably gave the farmer a big water bill too huh.)
