Charlie Pride - Is Anybody Going to San Antone?
Almost 20 years ago, we all came together to say goodbye to my grandmother. Crowded into an ICU, whispering words of love and sorrow, I did my best to make my peace with letting go of the woman whose first name was chosen to be a part of my own name.
But she fooled us all back then. She pulled through, strong as ever, and has lived even more life than any of us could have predicted. And now, here we are again, though the circumstances are vastly different.
I am stuck in California, kept from North Carolina because of a virus that can’t hurt her but can hurt so many others. I’ve done my best to say goodbye this time around - recording my voice from the empty lobby of KCBS yesterday, hearing her weak voice tell me she loves me as drive down the freeway, and this morning... speaking into her ear as my mother holds the phone, telling her I love her, how much I’ll miss her, how much she means to me and always will...
A woman full of love, of humor, of acceptance, of secrets, and of so many stories - my grandmother is definitely one of a kind - and no one has ever made me feel more loved and more special than her. S. and I got to spend so much time with her this past Christmas, talking and listening and giving good hugs.
Today, I am sad. I’ll be that way tomorrow, too. And so on and so on. But I will make my peace this time as well and hold her close in my heart forever.
She wasn’t overly big on music, but she did enjoy some big band, old time hymnals, and Charlie Pride.
I love you, Big G. Thank you for always loving your little girl.
