Cognitive Functional Stack – Fi Ne Si Te

Heedo is a soft and comforting presence in the competition.  He’s quiet but has a decent pool of friends in The Unit.  Puppy-like extroverts as well as more thinking-type introverts seek him out for companionship, wisdom, and skills at different points in the competition.  Although he tries to keep up the more hard exterior of a rapper, he’s gentle on the inside, contrasting with his dramatically deep voice.

The dominant function of an INFP is their Fi, which controls their feelings and moral systems.  Heedo claims not to express his emotions very well, but there is no doubt that he feels quite strongly about different things, and can also appreciate and understand when other people experience strong emotions.  He simply expresses his own thoughts and feelings a little less because he’s quite introverted and introspective.  INFPs feel deeply but rarely express this, but Heedo starts doing this in the Butterfly performance when he can create his own heartfelt rap.  INFPs are one of the most empathetic types, because they can relate to other people’s feelings from their own past experiences of similar feelings (Fi-Si).  He’s a good listener, and doesn’t mind company but also greatly needs and appreciates solitude.

INFPs are poetic types and this is shown with Heedo not simply in the fact that he writes lyrics and poetry himself (creating using his Ne), but that he is also a tranquil type (Fi, introvert), who has previously said that he would just love to walk along the beach while listening to music.  He’s poetic in his thoughts and expressions, previously saying, “even though we may not speak the same language, if you’ll stay by our sides, I believe [Fi] we can make all kinds of memories together [Ne-Si]” about international fans.

INFPs have a lot of belief in their friends and other people around them, but little in themselves. For instance, he has the insight (Ne-Si) during one of the eliminations, when Hanggyul is worrying, to tell him, “don’t worry, you’ll make it”.  He knows that Hanggyul has the popularity even if he doesn’t know that about himself at all.  Heedo wants to make it, and has some kind of faith in himself as a skilled rapper, but doesn’t believe in his popularity – he was surprised when Seyong picked him for the 4th mission team, and he also believes himself to be the least attractive member in B.I.G.  This is due to the worrier side of a Ne-type.  

INFPs are oriented to their own inner beliefs and dreams extremely strongly, and will follow their hearts whenever possible.  So it hurts Heedo’s heart when during the practice for Butterfly, he reveals that although B.I.G debuted at about the same time as certain idols and groups, he had to watch as those groups ascended while B.I.G “stagnated”.  He feels like he might have let down those he loved (Fi-Ne) and is also sorry to his parents, and he wonders if they even still watch him (negative Ne).  He accepts help from other people but rarely seeks it out, preferring to come to his own judgements about things and practice hard until he is satisfied with his own work (Fi).  He sometimes works so hard on writing his lyrics that he forgets to eat (Ne; less developed Si; not a sensor type).

He’s deeply reflective and sensitive, and sometimes the over-analyzing nature of Ne means that he will end up coming to the wrong conclusion about an issue and then dealing with it and talking about it publicly in a way that is not necessarily appropriate (inferior Te).  This occurs in the boxing ring when he calls up Kanto.  His Ne has been mulling over how hurt his Fi felt when Kanto dissed him in the rap battle.  His dominant Fi had taken the diss as a personal slight, which had he been thinking of other rap battles, or even his own rap (Si), he would have realized he shouldn’t have done.  Heedo had been so caught up in his own feelings about the diss that he had forgotten that he himself had dissed Jun prior to Kanto dissing him! (Underdeveloped Si).  In his blindness, he used his Ne and his inferior Te to write a counter-attack rap which he produced in the boxing ring.  At this point, Kanto then tore him to shreds because Kanto’s Ti had a much better understanding of the inner mechanics of the rap battle process.  Jun also, in spite of being a bit hurt at the time through his Fe, had also used his Fe to realize that Heedo had not meant it maliciously.  (Jun and Heedo are, of course, actually quite close friends, which could have affected Heedo’s view of his treatment of Jun compared to Kanto’s treatment of himself in the rap battles.)  This moment of blindness of logic can sometimes occur in people who have inferior Te.

Nonetheless, INFPs do not like conflict, so even though Heedo was the one to initiate the dialogue with Kanto in the boxing ring, he does not counter-attack, but simply accepts his fate and tries somewhat to diffuse the situation by acknowledging Kanto’s skilled rap.

Overall INFPs are idealistic dreamers who feel strongly and create their own beautiful art.  They can simultaneously be stubborn and gentle and sometimes suffer from a lack of self-confidence in spite of their great belief in the human spirit.  They usually have a belief that no-one really understands them, so would be likely to take this write-up hugely critically!  Nevertheless, I look forward to hearing more of Heedo’s deep but charming rap and hope he doesn’t have to toil too hard in the future to achieve his dreams.
