Okay so this is my new favorite thing I’ve learned today:
This is the Pennsylvania Railroad Class FF1. Nicknamed “Big Liz” and built for a proposed electrification of the PRR’s Allegheny Mountain routes, this engine had - in 1917 - 4,600 horsepower and 140,000 Pound Feet of Torque.
As a comparison, the most powerful diesel locomotives only surpassed this tractive effort in the 1990s with the introduction of engines like the AC6000CW, - that’s right, not even monsters like the DDA40X surpassed this thing - Big Liz was only surpassed by similarly nutty contemporaries like the Virginian Railway’s EL-2.
This engine is especially impressive because of how it failed - there was nothing wrong with the engine itself, except for one little problem - and I’m just going to quote Wikipedia here:
Big Liz" proved workable but too powerful for the freight cars of the time with its 4600 available horsepower and astonishing 140,000 lbf (620 kN) of tractive effort. Pulling the train it regularly snapped couplers and when moved to the rear as a pusher its force was sufficient to pop cars in the middle of the train off the tracks.
BIG LIZ, DESTROYER OF FREIGHT TRAINS
I love this so much.
Remember when the queen tried to use a state poverty fund to heat Buckingham Palace...
This fund was meant for schools, hospitals and low income earners.
The queen's wealth is estimated around £310 million...
The request to dip into the poverty fund was only rejected because ministers thought it would look bad.
Yeah, just wanted to remind people about that one.

I'll post pictures once he's settled in more but my Hydrosaurus pustulatus arrived yesterday in great condition!
@witchcraftexotics You guessed correct! It is a Sailfin, specifically Hyrosaurus pustulatus! This little guy will be arriving tuesday. He is an F2 Super Banana CBB by John Steele. Photos of his parents are the bottom two, who are both incredible animals (all photos taken by John Steele). I can’t wait to work with this species, another one to cross off my dream herp list!
