Catching Snapper.
Australian Snapper are considered a prize catch. They are caught in temperate waters from the bottom third of Western Australia all the way across the Great Australian Bight up the East Coast to South East Queensland. In Queensland and Northern New South Wales they are predominant in the cooler months of the year. They are fished for in the colder waters of Victoria and South Australia during the…

The New Network: Prosser Wine Network
From time to time there is a wine region that, while part of the larger Regional AVA (Columbia Valley) and mere miles from a famous AVA (Horse Heaven Hills), seems to get overlooked.

New Tasting Notes: Wot, Big Reds In Summer?
It’s 32 degrees and 60% humidity in the kitchen as I write this, hardly the kind of weather that gives you a hankering for a glass of big red. But lighter-bodied red, at least in the cool of the evening with dinner, is a definite goer.
Pinot noir is an obvious choice (see last week’s post) but Italian dolcetto, Beaujolais, and other light-bodied red varieties are useful substitutes. Mezzacorona Teroldego (tasting), for instance, or Santa Sofia Valpolicella (tasting), or a fruity Dolcetto d’Alba – such as Elvio Cogno’s Mandorlo (tasting) or G.B. Burlotto (tasting). Perhaps the best value in imported red I’ve had in months is a Sicilian Nero d’ Avola, Mandoleto 2012 (tasting), a $14 wine loaded with black cherry fruit: light, fresh and uncomplicated. All these reviews are now on huonhooke.com.
Then there’s shiraz, and I’ve uploaded 133 new-release shiraz reviews this month – among them, some gorgeous lighter-framed renditions of Australia’s favourite grape. Moderate alcohol (no more than 13.5%) and light tannins are the key here. They usually come from cooler regions.
Mayer Healesville Syrah 2012 (tasting) and all of Clonakilla’s 2012s (Shiraz Viognier, Murrumbateman Syrah, and O’Riada Shiraz) (tastings) fit the description. There’s a trend in some regions to harvest shiraz earlier and make a lower-alcohol, lighter wine. Other examples in Canberra are Gundog Marksman’s (tasting) and Gallagher (tasting). It’s a commendable idea, but sometimes the wines are a bit green and acidic.
From more established shiraz regions, Bethany 2010 (Barossa) (tasting) and Tahbilk 2010 (Nagambie Lakes) (tasting) are also lovely, easy-drinking, low-alcohol styles. New Zealand also does this style well, and in my latest uploads I would single out Dry River (tasting), Te Mata Estate (tasting), Te Awa (tasting), Trinity Hill (tasting), Stonecroft (tasting), Fromm (tasting), Salo (tasting) and Craggy Range (tasting) – all labeled syrah.
Happy drinking!
