A little hand quilting: Last week I felt like trying something new, so I sewed up a little “liberated star” block (a Gwen Marston technique; but there is a tutorial over here).

Then I decided on a bit of a whim to hand quilt this block, just for fun. I haven’t done all that much handwork over the last year but I want to get back into it little by little. Also, I can do little bits of handwork on the bus on the way to work, which allows for some built-in time for stitching during the work week. I’m using thick perle cotton and an embroidery needle; I packed in with me and stitched for three bus rides this week!

I’ve been enjoying the process so far and the texture that it’s giving. I’m not sure what I’ll do with this one when it’s done...  but I’m feeling like maybe I will do more of this sort of “hand-quilt-as-you-go.” I’m thinking of something like Maureen Cracknell’s method of piecing quilted panels together, then adding a backing at the end - but hand-quilting, instead of by machine, and using smaller panels I can bring on the bus with me!
