Fading to Dust
"Well, that’s that. As usual your skills were amazing, Milla."
The words came with a ragged paint from the white-clad Lord. Both of them were accomplished swordsmen, Asbel himself having trained for several years before reaching a level that so far remained unchallenged.
Yet that didn’t mean it was unhindered. His companion and himself fought no garden-variety monsters, no, instead the Lord of Spirits and the Lord of Lhant came across a handful of formidable Nova Monsters. The likes of which he imagined could have only come from the bottom of Lambda’s Cocoon.
His white coat was testament to the level of difficulty, and whenever his back lay unheeded; Milla Maxwell had been there to back him up, side by side, sword by sword.
Was it any surprise that the monsters held little chance against such powerful Lords?
Battered and bruised, the eighteen year old hero leaned against the hilt of his sword, awkwardly seating himself amidst an array of monster corpses.
Glancing over his shoulder, his smile was expectant, proud.
"—Milla? Did you hear me?"
A smile that was taken from him the moment he’d looked.
"Mill.." Her voice died in his throat, an almost cracked whisper.
Asbel’s close friend wasn’t moving. Lying on her side, golden hair a curly shroud over her back, the only sign that something was amiss was the blood pooling beneath her slender frame.
His heart stuttered in his throat.
“Milla.”
All injuries were ignored. His weak knees, bruised fingers, everything. Excalibur held him up like a crutch as the injured teen made his way to the woman he considered a partner to him.
Gently, he pulled her over, heart so tight Asbel wondered if he even breathed.
"Milla, come on .. it’s over now, talk to me, okay?"
Heterochromatic eyes met with lidded, misty red ones, a faint, bloodied smile gracing the spirit’s mouth.
"Ah, Asbel." Her voice was whisper-faint, eyes crinkling with a warmth and pride that came from a cultivated camaraderie. A powerful friendship that could not be broken.
Shakily, uncertain if it was a breath or a laugh, Asbel smoothed back her hair with trembling fingers.
"H-Hey..you scared me. You weren’t talking or answering me. You’re okay, right? It’s time to head back to Lhant. I know some Mabo Curry that’s just waiting with your name on it, yeah?"
His laugh shook so much that it must have earned enough attention for a chilling hand to touch his cheek.
"Yes, you human’s and your wonderful food…how deeply I have come to cherish it..and your lives."
Milla’s voice was soft, achingly gentle in a way that twisted his insides, his heart in tight, mangled knots.
"Milla..your hand is cold, are you cold? D-Do you want my jacket, here I can fix this wound up, okay? I’ll take care of you since you took care of me this battle, I owe you, okay? Just let me fix it, Milla, I’ll make it okay — I’ll make this okay Mil—"
Another hand fell to his other cheek, bloodied from their battle.
"You cannot save everything, Asbel. Not because you are human but because you are only one person. It is a burden too great for any to bear. You..will not be able to fix me."
The finality in her voice stirred a violent, almost furious reaction from the younger of the two.
"No, that’s ridiculous, I can protect you, Milla! We’re friends! Don’t say such..such dumb things!"
"Asbel..you are a truly great Lord. Perhaps not of Spirits but I think you would make a fine one, should your life had been different. You are a kind warrior, a kind man. A good..human..—"
Milla’s voice grew fainter, those chilled hands against his face slipping if not for his trembling grasp on her wrists, holding them there.
"N-..No..no I’m nothing. I"m nothing if I can’t protect the people I care about — w-who says I can’t protect everything? There’s no rule about that..I can protect Milla…"
A strangled sound short of a sob escaped.
"I can protect my friend."
The smile she granted him with was her last.
"You have protected your world, sacrificed your life at the highest cost..you need not feel any regret. You fought bravely beside me, as my partner. If you should blame yourself for this, I will never forgive you. So instead, I have this request of you, my friend."
The svelte woman in his arms felt painfully light, in a way that deepened the faultlines of Asbel’s already scarred heart.
"Seek happiness..for yourself. Continue to be this world’s guardian, after all you are not the Lord of Spirits, but a Lord of People, of all lives, correct? We are not so different..You must work also in my share..but do not forget yourself. I order you this, Asbel.."
But all she felt were hot tears on her cheeks, dripping from the man with the mismatched eyes, a trembling smile.
”..I—I promise, Milla. I’ll..I’ll…protect everything. I’ll protect this world, the lives in it..and whenever I visit your world, I’ll protect it too..so you..you can rest now, okay? You’ve done a really good job..you’re — you’re amazing, you know that?”
Slipping hands wiped his tears, then fell.
"No tears, Asbel..I am happy to fight and fall beside you…my dear friend." The Spirit whispered, and silence followed.
His companion was gone.
And for a moment without sound, he pulled her head beneath his chin, cradled her to his chest and ignored their blood drenching his coat. Felt the softness of the hair she was so proud of, the warm body that had supported him when his would falter. The warm smile that had graced so many lives — no longer.
A sob escaped finally, like the cry of a crippled animal.
He couldn’t keep his promise.
Oh my! I've never seen a human which such a bright hair color. What sort of arte did you use to color it?"
"Arte? This is my natural hair color. I was born like this."

Milla hadn't been expecting company at her shrine outside of Nia Khera today. In fact, it had been a while since she'd seen anybody from Rieze Maxia. So when a certain familiar somebody appeared in front of her shrine, the young spirit was certainly surprised. So much for going to visit Nia Khera - not when she had a guest now.
"Greetings." Milla said succinctly. "I wasn't expecting company today. You certainly surprised me. Is there any particular reason you've come here today?"
bigbazongas replied to your post: Hey Gaius. I heard you ranked sixth on Leise Maxia's top ten most peasant people.
I heard all the chimeriad are on the list too. All except Wingull.
"Tell me Maxwell, what ranking system did they put Wingull on?"
