Spectrophobia: fear of ghosts and phantoms
Requested by: starmedic (also helped with the basic storyline)
The power had gone out at the inn that night.
It was still a little too early to sleep, so the group had decided to sit around a small candle as they spoke about all sorts of random things. But, considering the enjoyment the mercenary gets out of scaring the others (especially Elize), it didn't take too long before the topic got to ghost stories.
"But the problem was... There was no one there to fight the monster! Only... a floating Lillium orb!"
After the last line, the mercenary punctuated his story with a little "OOooooOO~!", which caused Elize to make a small whine of protest.
"Alvin... That story was so dumb." Jude was the first one to speak after Alvin was done. "There's no such thing as ghosts..."
"I'm going to have to agree with Jude here, Alvin." Milla chimed in, her fingers to her chin. "From what I read in a book, the behaviors of ghosts only seem to be spirits and humans that are on their way to the spirit world to be reincarnated."
"Oh yeah?" Alvin said as he turned to triumphantly smile at Jude. "Then why are you shaking?"
"But I'm not! Don't go spouting lies to boost your ego."
"Is that so...?"
There was a voice that whispered, so soft it only sounded like an echo in the room. But it caught the attention of the children, Elize clinging to Jude as they both started to visibly shake.
"BOO!"
Rowen jumped out from the shadows, tapping both Elize and Jude on the shoulders. He had sneaked away while Alvin was telling his story, specifically to provide help in the scaring department.
As Rowen laughed, Leia simply shook her head. "Aw, come on, you guys can't be that easily scared! We all know ghosts aren't real..."
In her moment of distraction, Alvin had managed to move behind her and oh, so gently... Blew air into her ear. She panicked, clinging to her childhood friend as she screamed, "JUDE!! SAVE ME FROM THE DEAD!!"
The last thing Alvin saw in his second fit of laughter was a screaming Tipo that lunged at his head.
[[ HERE'S A THING do side Alvin of the aftermath of their fight c': ]]
His pride wasn’t the only thing bruised.
A Mercenary, a hired gun… For the first time in his life, he couldn’t do the job he was set out to do. He paid for it, the kid not holding back the moment they finally fought.
Alvin was grateful, to be honest. Any hit lighter probably wouldn’t have knocked him out of… Whatever slump he had gotten into the moment they managed to get back to shore.
"Why don’t you just kill me?" Alvin said, not even caring about the fact his tone was pathetic. He was nothing but pathetic, and he’d rather his life end than face Musee or anyone else this way.
"What? How can you say such a thing?" The tone Jude uses causes Alvin to look up, surprised. The mercenary wanted to ask why the other would even care… Why would anyone care after all he’s done?
After that, Alvin could only sit there and bask as the lightbulb in Jude’s head slowly started to shine brighter and brighter. The way the medic ranted, the way he emoted with his words… They came to a realization at the same time, and Alvin decided to act first as he staggered to his feet and shoved the boy to the side.
The mercenary probably wouldn’t admit this for a long time, but Jude gave him the encouragement to face Musee despite his failures.
"Alright, I'll prove to you I'm worth relying on!"
Thanking your muse
"Thanks kid! You're a big help!"
In need of help from your muse
"Hey, I could use a little personal attention from doctor Jude, if you don't mind~."
When your muse is defeated during the battle
"Jude!! Hey, get it together! You're not allowed to go down after what you told me!"
Victory!! (with / linked with your muse)
"You're not gonna give me the cold shoulder this time, are ya?"
Victory!! (without your muse)
"Hey, are you alright? The fight is over so, let me help you onto your feet..."
Defeat…
"Hey, don't be too hard on yourself. We did the best we could, and that's all that matters! Why am I the one giving inspirational speeches now...? That's your job."
Milla hadn't been expecting company at her shrine outside of Nia Khera today. In fact, it had been a while since she'd seen anybody from Rieze Maxia. So when a certain familiar somebody appeared in front of her shrine, the young spirit was certainly surprised. So much for going to visit Nia Khera - not when she had a guest now.
"Greetings." Milla said succinctly. "I wasn't expecting company today. You certainly surprised me. Is there any particular reason you've come here today?"
Estelle hummed as she glanced through the shelf, trying to pinpoint a specific book. She was currently situated in the library of the medical school she was attending, looking for novels and research journals for their recently-assigned essay. It wouldn't be too difficult to do, but considering her diligent work as always, she wanted to get started on it immediately so she wouldn't procrastinate on the matter later on.
To be honest, she hadn't expected to become a medical student. She wasn't sure what she wanted to do at first, but considering how she loved to help people and heal them, surely this would be the best course - right? At least, that's what she thought - so she may as well try. One doesn't know until they actually attempt it, after all!
Once there was a good pile in her hands, she glanced around to look for an empty seat with a lot of space. There was only one, and the other side was already preoccupied by another student - someone in her class, if she recalled correctly.
A polite smile on her face, she walked over to the area. "Hello!" she spoke cheerfully, "Jude, correct? Would you mind if I took a seat here?" She motioned to the chair across from him.
"Mm, something with meat I think. Tenderloin or steak, maybe chicken..." Jude looks thoughtful about it, head tilting slightly. "You're not really picky so I know you could eat anything, but...I notice you have a small preference for that? Oh, but I could also make that with pasta! Or in a creamy stew...But I know peach pie's the dessert at least!" Success.
"Really?" Alvin smiles brightly. "To be honest, I'm not picky because it's your cooking. But I like the fact you managed to pick up on my preferences--."
The mercenary stops mid-sentence once the dessert is mentioned, his arm wrapping around Jude and tugging the boy close to him.
"Peach pie? Yep, peach pie is definitely the way to seal the deal with me."
