BIG DEBBIE - Ab - Ra - Ca - Deb - Ra on RATSKIN RECORDS

Today is a special day because you get TWO vinyl reviews! The first one is an album I’ve been spinning NONSTOP since I received it and I’m 100% sure that those of you who love noise, industrial, synthwave, and experimental (but an accessible version of all of them together) will also be so into it. It’s called BIG DEBBIE - “Ab RA Ca Deb RA” and it’s the first of two albums I’m featuring from my friends at RATSKIN Records @ratskinrecords down in lovely Oakland California (look out for my pre-order review for Oakland labelmate @spellling later this week too!).

Noisy synthwave and melodic experimental are two genres that I really get into because they remind me of lots of music from the 80s and 90s that felt like I was listening to the soundtrack to a scary movie. Cheesy, maybe, but hey, I always keep it real with you here. For the music theory-inclined in you, this stuff is not just someone with a bedroom rig being self-indulgent with a Macbook Pro, this album is an absolute soundscape. I go real hard to the very first track but “Sea Priestess” is my favorite on the album because it becomes one of those beautiful, droney, synth-grinds that makes you hope it doesn’t end too soon and then you realize it’s already been playing for 11 minutes. This whole album is packed front to back with textures, quirks, melodic hooks, and just enough accessibility to coax the experimental newbies out of their shells. The album has been out in one form or another since 2013 but this special pressing by RATSKIN dropped weeks ago and you should absolutely pick up a copy before they’re gone. The artwork is amazing, the sleeve unfolds to become a pretty awesome poster, and the mastering work on the vinyl itself is pristine. If this is the quality and workmanship we can expect from RATSKIN’s roster, then get ready to hear me talk about them a lot more in the future!
