Ōkami Enjo - better known by her English pen name Socorro Faol - leaned back in her office chair and sighed. The CID was a bit of a mess now compared to when she left it several years ago. Back then, everything was normal. Cases came in, Inspectors and Enforcers were deployed, Dominators were used, and everyone came home fine, or at least not dead. Now… what had happened? She knew, of course, but it was still hard to wrap her head around. An Inspector turning criminal, Enforcers dying left and right… No wonder she’d been asked to come back.
Behind Enjo, her son Mamoru (his English name was Alister) was clicking a ballpoint pen out of sheer boredom. “Why are we even back here? No, why are you back here. Why am I even here at all?” He rolled his chair across the aisle to face his mother. “I thought you said you didn’t want to come back to the MWPSB after Dad died.”
The clicking pen was getting on Enjo’s nerves. She took it from Mamoru and put it on the other side of her desk away from him. “I’m here because I was asked to return to fill vacancies left by the Kamui incidents. You’re here because I asked for you and because you have the aptitude.” She turned to look at her son. “I know you’re bored. Go settle in. I’ll call you if something comes up.” Mamoru stood and walked towards the door. “Wait a minute. I’m getting a message from the Chief.” She scanned the text on the holo, then closed it and stood.
“Did something come up?” Mamoru asked.
“Don’t get cheeky,” Enjo retorted. “We have a case. We’re meeting Division 1 at the scene.”
The ride to the scene was fast. Upon arrival, Enjo and Mamoru saw the remains of a fire being put out on the fourth floor of an apartment building. They saw the members of Division 1 standing close to the entrance; they were probably waiting to get the all-clear to go inside. Mother and son approached the group, and Enjo addressed her point of contact.
“Enforcer Ginoza?” She held out her hand for a handshake. “I’m Inspector Ōkami, and this is Enforcer… Ōkami.” God, they sounded like a circus act. Wolf and Wolf. “Division 2 has been assigned to work this case with you all, and well, we’re all of Division 2. Strangely, Chief Kasei named you as our point of contact, rather than Inspector Tsunemori. In any event, we’re here. Could you get us up to speed?”
