Mount escape
I recently posted this video of a very cool-looking mount escape I found on Youtube. I tried it for the first time today in class and thought I'd share my experience with it.
I tried this escape while rolling with a guy who was probably around my weight (~155 lbs), but with much longer arms and legs. Unfortunately, I didn't have much luck with it; as soon as I popped up onto my side, I felt him going for my back (possibly for an armbar), so I squared myself back off to avoid the submission and went for my standard hip bump reversal, which actually worked. I guess the first key is not to pop up too high onto your side when you're starting the escape.
I tried it again later and found a better angle for my body, but I was having some trouble hooking the far leg. Although part of it may have been my ill-fitting gi pants (I make an effort not to use gear problems as a scapegoat, but I definitely don't think a slightly bigger gi would hurt), I'm sure most of my problem was that I wasn't bending at the hip enough.
Even though I didn't have the best luck with this technique today, I'm going to keep at it. Hopefully I can get a buddy to train with outside of class sometime; I'd love to break this technique down and drill it until I'm totally comfortable with it.
