“The 7 Sacred Grandfather Teachings” (part 2) at the IKEA Edmonton Indigenous Gathering Place Gallery. This hand painted, 40 foot mural was created by Indigenous Artist @lancecardinal75 who comes from the Bigstone Cree Nation in Treaty 8 Territory. The 7 Sacred Grandfather Teachings are represented by the seven animals seen in this painting and serve as guiding principles for many First Nations, Métis and Inuit People. The mural features imagery and ideals that have become the cultural foundation of many indigenous cultures and guides us all towards living a full and healthy life. “Love” is represented by Kihew (the Eagle). The eagle is full of love because he is closest to the Creator and was given the strength to carry all the teachings. ...Love is one of the greatest teachers and one of the hardest teachings to receive. To know love and to love ourselves truly lets us be at peace with ourselves. “Honesty” is represented by Mistahâpêw (the Giant). It takes great bravery to be honest in our words and actions. It takes even more bravery to be honest with ourselves and who we are. “Truth” is represented by Miskinâhk (the Turtle). The turtle was here during the creation of the earth and carries all the sacred teachings of life on his back. We must always speak from a truthful place and try not to deceive ourselves and others. “Bravery” is represented by Maskwa (the Bear). The mama bear needs a lot of courage to defend her young and still provide all the things that they need to survive. This teaches us to focus on our inner strength and have the courage to be our true selves.
