Throwback Thursday with a real blast from the past - did you know that Games Workshop Hobby Centers used to get advance sets of new releases? Whenever a new codex would drop, a few weeks out from the release we'd get a black box containing the new plastic sprues with which to promote it. Codex: Dark Angels (2007) was one such release, coming with a box full of Ravenwing and veteran squad upgrades; the first time they had been available in plastic.
They've started doing that kind of thing, again - my shop got an early copy of Necromunda, for instance - but the practice of dropping a black box with every launch went out of vogue around the same time that GW started switching to one-man stores. It's tough to keep up with a steady stream of new releases and mind the shop at the same time, especially when you can't share the load.
This squad was painted somewhat haphazardly between demo games and working the register; to which I attribute its chintzy paint job. But, also, more than ten years ago, so maybe a degree of amateurishness was involved? Who can say. I feel that my technique has improved somewhat since then.
Fun fact, Citadel did not make round cavalry bases at the time so these were kludged together from rectangular bases and spare 25mm slottas. They wound up a little short, in retrospect, but they were good enough at the time.
I don't recall what ultimately happened to this squad - the store's Dark Angels may have eventually been given away as a prize, but it's equally probable that they were just thrown out by a certain former regional manager turned minor YouTube personality. A number of my shop's armies and displays met with such an ignoble end.
