The Crux Got a Full Redesign
Specialized has unveiled a new version of its Crux gravel bike, and it’s a much bigger overhaul than a routine update. The bike moves even further away from its cyclocross roots and leans hard into modern gravel racing, with a redesigned frame, new aerodynamic shaping, and significantly wider tire clearance.
The company says the new frame was developed using lessons learned from its road racing bikes, especially the Tarmac line, while still keeping the Crux lightweight and compliant enough for rough terrain. Specialized claims measurable aerodynamic gains compared to the previous generation, reflecting how competitive gravel racing continues to get.
Other changes include a 1x-only drivetrain setup, compatibility with larger tires up to 2.2 inches, updated wheel and cockpit options, and geometry tweaks aimed at improving stability without losing the bike’s quick handling feel. Multiple build levels are launching, from high-end S-Works models down to more accessible complete builds.
Observation:
It’s funny how gravel bikes started as the “simpler” alternative to road racing tech, and now they’re chasing aero gains and race optimization in almost the same way. The Crux still seems focused on speed first, but the definition of a gravel race bike keeps getting broader every year.
