Domestic violence is a serious problem worldwide. And unfortunately, most organisations that help combat domestic violence and provide help for the survivors are underfunded and understaffed. This is why I created this feature. In this weekly column, I will be posting links to 5-7 items sold on Etsy, eBay or any other retail sites, the proceeds from sales of which go to various organisations of the sort, or attempt to raise domestic violence awareness.

“Barn Owl hair band. A unique, hand-drawn barn owl illustration, attached to a shiny golden metal headband. An unusual hair accessory and a piece of wearable art, created to raise funds for a good cause!
This is a 'one of a kind' hair accessory. To create it, I drew a Barn Owl in delicate shades of peach and slate blue, onto a thin sheet of white plastic. I carefully cut the illustration out using scissors, and baked it in my kitchen oven until the artwork had shrunk in size and become sturdier. Then I attached my little Barn Owl, which now measures just 8cm (3") tall, to a metal hair band.
I use my Etsy shop to raise funds for various charities. The Barn Owl hair-band was created to raise funds for First Base*, a centre near where I live (in Brighton, England) that provides homeless women and men with services such as hot showers, laundry, skills training and advice to help get them back on their feet. All proceeds from the sale of this unique piece of jewellery will be donated to that good cause.”
*many victims of domestic violence end up on the screet once they manage to escape. First Base can make a real difference in their lives.
