In 2010, Metalholic chose Mutiny Within‘s eponymous debut as its metal “album of the year.” The group’s first effort offered something both familiar and refreshing in a sound that resonated with us. It's not often that I get commissioned to design and illustrate the brand and CD packaging for bands, or being invited to private performances by them. Mutiny Within was a dream project, as on the one hand I got to finally collaborate with Gail Marowitz at Roadrunner Records after following her work for years and on the other, meeting and connecting with a gifted new band. But as it often happens, MW broke up after intense touring and it’s members took their separate ways. Sad yes, but don’t weep too soon, AJ (Andrew Jacobs) kept in touch and kept me in the loop about his new work as well as the turns his career has taken since. (I have never met a rock star in-the-making that answers e-mails so diligently, even when on the road). So here I am, a few Fridays ago, at the SIR studios for a showcase by his new band, VEXT (Tommy Vext-vocals, Angel Vivaldi-guitar, AJ-base and Bill Fore-drums), arriving completely unprepared for what was to follow. I might be old and not-getting-out-of-the-house enough but still, the instant explosion of energy took me by surprise. Tommy’s stage dominance and quality of voice didn’t waste time warming up, he exploted into the first song of the set. While wiping the blood coming out of my eardrums, I was bobbing my head to the rhythm and smiling like a schoolgirl texting. Haven’t experienced such raw energy since ever and the handful of songs preformed made me wish I could play an instrument, any instrument (other than Photoshop) in order to get a first hand taste of the energy on stage. Check their new single video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dG8mWu2Y60&sns=em and get red with envy.
