BILLENNIUM - Narrative Illustration
Our task was to illustrate 4 insert pages and a cover for one of 6 given short stories. I choose Ballard’s Billennium, not because I thought it was the best story, but because I felt the ideas behind it were just so rich. I loved imagining the textures of the botched plywood walls, the flaking plaster, construction always in progress. The juxtaposition of these horrifically raw battery houses as they sit in the skeletons of the once worshiped architecture of careful and thoughtful design. I could imagine the smell, the stuffiness of this dystopian life, and really really enjoyed illustrating it.
These final images were collaged in Photoshop using a wide collection of textures and ephemera I created and collected for the project.
