There’s the sheer craftmanship of the musicians Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, James Cobb and Wynton Kelly standing in a room together making sublime music. There’s the smooth ‘easy-listening’ flow of one composition into another, sitting so comfortably together on one album. That isn’t to say that the music is what is often now termed “easy listening”, it is ‘easy’ on the ear because it is so perfectly balanced, in the way that a Mozart symphony or Bach cantata is ‘easy listening’. . And then there’s the extraordinary fact that it is all completely improvised ‘on the spot’. As Bill Evans, the pianist here (really coming into his own on Blue in Green) writes in the liner notes: “Miles conceived these settings only hours before the recording dates and arrived with sketches with indicated to the group what was to be played. Therefore, you will hear something close to pure spontaneity in these performances. The group had never played these pieces prior to the recordings and I think without exception the first complete performance of each was a ‘take’...” .
